THis is a HP G72 series Notebook PC,just 1 yr old, Product #LG583UA#ABA with Windows 7. It's done great til last week, it shut down and when the power is turned on, I get the HP screen with the ecp.at the bottom, then it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in upper left corner and it won't do anything. I have to turn off then back on and hit escape to view the startup menu.I can get into dx.'s and have ran the tests,it passed all. I can get into the boot and bios screen but I don't know what to do there. If I triy F11 Sys Rec,it goes to that black screen. Also if I hit enter to continue startup it also goes to that black screen.HELP PLEASE
Oh and it has recently shut off saying to prevent overheating. I have also tried taking the battery out and unplug, but nothing happened.

Hi tychelzz, thanks for putting your Product number in, that really helps ![]()
Okay first off I would recommend following the "Clean the vents" instructions for your notebook from this doc, that also has other good tips.
Make sure you unplug your unit and remove the battery first
After doing that, before putting the battery or AC back in, hold down the power button for 30 secs.
Then plug in the AC & see if you can boot into windows.
If it works then please go to the driver site on HP for your notebook (attention anyone else... this next link is for drivers for this model notebook specifically) and make sure you have the latest BIOS version, right now that is F.37.
You can see your current BIOS version...in the BIOS
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategor
If it did not get you into windows...please post your current BIOS version.
If the PC is off, and you press the power button and press the "f2" key, does it take you into a menu?
What can you see?
I think that's enough for now, let's start with this and when you reply that should give anyone on here more information to try to assist you.
Note: For anyone who also posted in this thread, if you do not have the same exact product number please reply with the one you do have.
Here is how to find it:
Please would you post your Product number, here is a link to help you find it.

Please don't post your serial number, that is for one-on-one support.
Good luck.

I have the same issue as others who have posted. My vents are clean (they already were clean).
My computer passes all of the system diagnostics.
I have tired removing the battery unplugging the cord and then holding the power button down for 30 seconds after which I attempted to restart. Nothing changed.
The f12 key doesn't do anything.
My system bios is F.16
Notebook Modle HP G72-250US
Thank you for your help

Hello Tattitude, thanks for the information.
The latest BIOS for your unit is F.37, but if you can't get past the Blinking Black screen that's not going to help you much.
BTW it's the "f2" key, we're not sure if you just hit a typo or not, please let me know if when you can power on and tap the "f2" key if you see anything.
If you still don't see anything and it's passing the Diags and you've cleaned the vents we would recommend contacting support, they may need to have your unit sent in for service to determine if there is an issue.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply.
When I hit F2 it opens the HP Advanced System Diagnostic Screen.
What do I do from here?

thanks for letting us know you can boot to the f2 diagnostics, it's a good place to run diags from.
it also lets us know the PC can still get into that menu...just another piece of information.
