My Laptop won't start! Help!

Hello, I have a HP Pavillion dv6, and just starting today, whenever I try to turn my laptop on, it wont boot up completely. Everything will be fine at first, with all the lights up and everything, but after the initial screen in which you can press the "f#" keys (i.e for system recovery), then it will go to the black screen and stay there.

The keyboard and screen are still lit up and I can clearly tell my laptop is powered up and on, but it just stays frozen on this screen. I tried to go into system recovery by pressing f11 at the initial screen, but it freezes after that also, and won't take me into it.

If anyone can tell me what the problem is and what i can do to fix it, that'd be much appreciated! thanks T_T.

Re: My Laptop won't start! Help!

Hi,

Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

Can you also post back with the following.

1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of your dv6 seires notebook ( from the service tag underneath your notebook ) - see Here for a further explanation.

2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 32bit ).

Regards,

Re: My Laptop won't start! Help!

Thanks for helping David.

I ran both the "Primary Hard Disk Self Test" and "Memory Test" and everything was fine; no errors came up.

The Product number is : WA791UA#ABC and model number is : dv602174ca

The operating system is windows 7 and I'm fairly certain it's 64-bit.

Re: My Laptop won't start! Help!

Hi,

You're welcome :smileyhappy:

Before anything else, try a Hard Reset as follows.

Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and see if the notebook will start.

If the above has no effect, try the following.

If you don't already have one, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Recovery CD.  Download the relevant ISO from the links below.

Windows 7 32bit

Windows 7 64bit

You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, or if you already have this, insert the CD and restart to boot from it.  Select the Repair option.

Select the 'Repair your Computer' option and follow Option 2 in the guide on the link below to run Start-up Repair – you may need to run this 2 or 3 times.

Let me know.

Re: My Laptop won't start! Help!

Hi David,

I tried your first suggestion, and unfortunately it didn't work.

As for your second suggestion, even after doing it multiple times, when the startup repair is finished and asks me to restart, upon restarting, the same problem occurs and it won't get past the black screen.

In the Startup Repair Diagnosis and repair details, it says that I have 1 root cause, which is that "Boot manager failed to find OS loader."

It then did the following repair actions :1) File repair - failed

                                                                      2) Boot configuration data store repair - failed

                                                                      3) System restore - successful

Even though it says that the system restore was successful, after every restart i have the same problem, and doing another startup repair afterwards has the same results.

If i have no option left then I will just take my laptop to an expert to fix.

Re: My Laptop won't start! Help!

Hi,

Boot from the Rescue CD again, except this time choose the Command Prompt.  When this loads, enter the following command and hit enter.

bootrec /fixboot                   ( note that there is a space between bootrec and the / )

When this command has completed, remove the CD and see if the notebook will boot normally.

Re: My Laptop won't start! Help!

Hi,

Boot from the Rescue CD, select Repair Your Computer and choose the Command Prompt.  When this loads, enter the following commands and hit enter after each one - include spaces as shown.

Bootrec.exe

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

c:

cd boot

attrib bcd -s -h -r

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /RebuildBcd

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

Remove the Rescue CD and try rebooting now.

Regards,
