Need help, our laptop (HP G72) will not boot at all.

We have a HP laptop G72. It is about nine months old and it is now to the point where it will not boot at all. I simply get a blinking cursor line in upper left hand corner.

I can press "esc" and get to the startup menu where I can analyze matters.

I tried F11 - "System Recovery" option - doesn't work. Get same blinking cursor.

Option F10 - "BIOS Setup" - when pressed, gives me a menu. Don't know anything about this menu, so I didn't change anything.

F9 - "Boot Device options," - gives me the option of using "notebook hard drive" or "Internal CD/DVD ROM drive." I'd like to choose option 2, but I'm pretty sure our laptop did not come up with a bootup CD and I don't know how to create one. Not sure even if I did, if this would help.

F2 takes me to system diagnostics menu, while F1 gives me a data sheet on screen. I've run a few tests on the F2 screen, and some of them take a few hours, so I know the "functioning" aspect of the hard drive seems to be intact.

A few days ago, I posted a separate note on reddit in which I said that our laptop had the following error, which posted about once a day, on the "blue screen of death" - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.  Someone responded that this might be (a) power, (b) memory, or (c) overheating problem.  (was given this error and subsequent crash about once a day; maybe a little less).

Not sure if that will help but I but wanted to give all relevant background. I did not have time to run any of the suggestions from that previous reddit.

Help me! I have a moderate level of understanding with these things. If I can get the computer to boot back up and the only true problem is a rootkit, I may be able to get rid of it (I've done this a few times already - not on this laptop but over the last few years). However, if it is fan/RAM/?? problem, I may take it somewhere or try self installing as well.

Edit: And another thing, not sure if this is relevant or not. Normally, when one turns off a laptop/desktop, you have to push in the power button for 8 seconds. On our laptop, it will turn off about 1-2 seconds after this button is being pushed in. Not sure if that is relevant or not or points toward a power source/button problem.

Second Edit:  one of my kids said he saw something in the last day or two that said something to the effect of "thermal shutdown" or the computer was at 91 degrees. (our computer was on yesterday - sat. the 21st - but crashed a few times while in use).

Hi

You have a couple of options as I see it please run the Hard drive & Memory test if any test fails you need to replace the part. If both the test passes you can call HP and ask them to send you the Recovery disc. As the unit is covered by the warranty they will be able to ship you the Part or the Disc.
