HP Dv5 Notebook, Factory installed Vista, running Windows 7, 32 bit
Tried to boot computer up this a.m. Originally started up, but could not get touch pad to respond. Had to turn off manually.
Now when I turn it on, a message comes up that says, press escape for menu options. Page comes up with:
F1 System information
F2 Start-up test
F3 Run-in test
F4 Hard disk test
F11 Error log
ESC Exit
For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup
I have a wireless connection which is working on my other devices. I have mid-level expertise.
Would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!

Hi
Please run the Start up test and check if all off them passes in case any test fails you might have to replace the part.
Once all the test passes press the Esc key then try to update the Bios & Touchpad driver from HP website and have it checked.

Hi,
I would try running tests on the HDD and Memory from the bios ( f10 ) as follows.
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.
If the above tests both pass, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD. Download the ISO from the link below.
You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. Once created, or if you already have this, insert the CD into the notebook and restart to boot from it. Select the Repair option.
Select the 'Repair your Computer' option and follow Option 2 in the guide on the link below to run Start-up Repair – you may need to run this 2 or 3 times.

If the above fails to help, make a note of any error messages you may get during the procedure and include them with your next post.
Regards,
DP-K

I ran the start-up test and it said 100% of the system memory tested ok. I am running the primary hard disk self test again, but it didn't find anything the first time, so I don't expect it to this time.
How can I update the bios and touchpad driver? The only screen I can get is the one I described. When I exit that screen, it is just black. My touchpad does not appear to be working. Also, it does not appear that my HP is connected to the internet, although my connection is working ok with my other devices.
Thank you.

Hi
You have a couple of options as I see it please try these steps might help you to fix your issue.
1) Disconnect the Battery & Adapter then press & hold the power button on Notebook for 30 seconds then turn on the unit and check if the Wireless light turns on.
2) Go to Device manager then uninstall the wireless drivers from Network Adapter and restart the unit and check if the light turns on.
3) Please update the Bios & Wireless driver from HP website.
4) Click start in search type Recovery Manager then click on it select Yes on User access control then select I need immediate help then select Driver & application recovery select the wireless driver and install it then restart the unit.
5) If you are comfortable reseating the wireless card which will be on the back panel off your unit you could try this steps as well.

Hi,
As you can't boot into Windows, did you run the 'Start-up repair' from the bootable Rescue CD as I suggested in my previous post?
If you did and this did not correct the issue, were there any specific error messages generated and if so, what were they?

Sorry it is taking so long. I ran the quick test for the hard disk and memory and both were ok. It froze up doing the long test. I'm also having trouble downloading the ImgBurn. It says a component is missing and wants me to download again. This is an old PC and is not too speedy.
Thanks!

Is there another program I can use to burn the repair CD? I can't get this ImgBurn to work.
Thanks!

I don't know how to disconnect the battery and adapter? I know how to change the battery, but I don't know what you mean by the adapter. I cannot go to device manager or anywhere else. My screen is black, my touchpad does not work, and I don't seem to have an internet connection on this notebook (I have connection on my other devices, so I know it is working).
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

The adapter is the power adapter that is plugged into your laptop.Unplug it and remove the battery. The battery usually has a slider switch that releases it.
Since the laptop froze during long test of hdd that may be a good indication that the hdd needs to be replaced.
