I'm having the exact same problem and I believe it's a hardware related issue. I've had this problem in windows and in ubuntu exact same symptoms. External mouse works, builtin keyboard and mouse simply stop responding.

FYI, I had this exact problem with my dm1-4010. One way to diagnosis if you're having the same issue as me is plug in an external mouse. My external laser mouse would continue to function but the builtin keyboard and mouse locked up entirely until rebooting. I even had other operating systems installed (ubuntu) and it had the same exact problem. I did *a lot* of testing trying to figure out what triggered it (bad driver, new touchpad type or something) nothing in event logs but considering the exact same thing would happen even in linux I knew something beyond software was responsible. After all this research I sent my laptop in to HP after explaining I already restored my unit multiple times and installed the latest touchpad/keyboard drivers with no luck. HP replaced my motherboard and now it works fine. I also suspected that heat was related (and maybe it is in relation to the old MB) because it appeared as the more I used it the worse it got (and faster it would break). I've been using my laptop for days now and it's been fine so it definitely appears to be a MB issue. I had the same issue you did, though, randomly, sometimes 5 minutes sometimes 5 hours my keyboard and mouse would flake out and wouldn't work again till rebooting. I recommend if you're experiencing the above problem you put in a support call and get your MB replaced asap!

I am having the same issue on my three month old dm1-1040 laptop. This only happened to me recently and I know its not an OS issue because it happpened to me while I was in BIOS.
I upgraded the BIOS and I am hoping that the problem has gone away. I would hate to have to send this back for a MB replacement.
I'll update this thres.

After updating the BIOS and installing all updates from HP and Microsoft, the problem had not gone away.
In fact, its been happening more often.
I contacted HP and sending this back for repair. The support guy couldnt tell me exatly what's wrong with my laptop except that I needed to send it back for "repair."
Im not sure what they'll do but I hope it gets fixed.
