Opening lid freezes system?

Hi,

 

Called HP and they want $99 to tech support so here I am.

 

I have a DV2726ca laptop running Vista.  Closing the lid with the power cable in the computer is supposed to remain running, no sleep or hibernate crap.  Lately everytime I open the lid the system is locked...  nothing works and need to reboot.  All virus and updates are clean / complete.

 

Annoying as hell, would really appreciate any advice (other then backing up all my stuff, blending it and buying a new system).

I did the HP Advisor for updates, said none was needed.  I will try manually those updates, fingers crossed and thanks for the advice.
