PAVILION DV6 1246TX BLACK SCREEN DURING RESTART

WHEN I SELECT RESTART, OR IF RESTART NEEDED BY NEWLY INSTALLED PROGRAM, THE LAPTOP APPEARS TO SHUTDOWN NORMALLY.  IT STARTS TO REBOOT AND BRINGS UP THE 'ESC FOR STARTUP MENU' SCREEN, FLASHES THE HARD DRIVE LIGHT A FEW TIMES, THEN SCREEN GOES BLACK WITH FLASHING CURSOR.  CURSOR STOPS FLASHING AND BLANK BLACK SCREEN, NO FURTHER ACTION. SPEAKER AND WIFI LIGHTS ON SOLID.  POWER SWITCH KILLS COMPLETELY, THEN POWER UP PROCEEDS NORMALLY.

VISTA HOME PREMIUM SP2 OPERATING SYSTEM.

Restore defaults in the bios after disconnecting all external devices from the notebook.

Re: PAVILION DV6 1246TX BLACK SCREEN DURING RESTART

Thanks for your reply Mumbodog.

However, this does not seem to be a BIOS problem.  I have a cloned USB hard drive, which i swapped out with the internal drive and tested for this problem and it worked OK.

One thing maybe not clear in my original post is that after the normal ESC prompt, the screen goes blank but the cursor only flashes maybe 6 or 8 times then the screen goes completely blank and black.

I'm thinking this might be a Vista boot problem, but I don't know how to check,

Re: PAVILION DV6 1246TX BLACK SCREEN DURING RESTART

Thanks Mumbodog.  The cure worked but not quite as your answer.

First, I spent some time making sure my cloned drive had everything I needed.

Then removed all devices from USB ports.

Shut down , waited 1 minute, then powered up.  Pressing F11 then F5 immediately cured the problem with no further steps needed.

I have printed your response just in case this happens again in the future.

one thing I noticed during this preformance was that the original drive showed 190+ gig usedb but the cloned drive only showed about 60 gig.  The cloning was done with Acronis backup software befoore I had the restart problem.

Maybe some connection?

Regards and thanks
