My dv5t-1000 turned off by itself and will not come back on. This has happened infrequently in the past - maybe 5 or 6 times before, but the computer has always come back to life after turning it back on. I have taken the battery out and have tried holding down the power button for one minute with no effect. I have noticed that when I press the power button or the quick play button the 3 lights on the front flash momentarily.

I found someone who said that if the fan is not working and the screen doesn't turn on, then it is likely a motherboard problem. Does this sound right or is there something else that I can try first?

I have delt with the same problem you are having with the dv5. If you press the power button, and you dont even get to the BIOS startup screen, its a dead motherboard. Sad but possibly true.
Another thing you can try is to reset the RAM memory by removing it and the battery, wait a few minutes, and return them to their locations. I have had problem with corrupt RAM interfering with startup. If you try this, and it still doesnt work, i'd say likely the mobo.

Did you ever get this resolved?
