Help!!!!!!
I have the same problem.
HP dv6 went to sleep and when tried to lift lid to wake up the screen is totally black.
Tried to shut down by holding the power button until the machine shut off and then left for a few minutes and turned on. Screen is still black.
What can we do.
I see one answer here is to update graphics but how do you do that when the screen is black?

Hold down F8 when it's booting and go into Safe Mode, this will let you update the driver, however I suspect it won't help, you'll probably have the latest already.
Or you could connect an external monitor.
When it boots to the black screen, leave it a while, mine often comes back after a couple of minutes.

We did get it fixed.
Did a hard start by unplugging, take the battery out, hold the power button down for 20 seconds and then plug a/c power back in and hit the on button.
Worked and so we did find the graphics was out of date and there was an update to be done.
Seems to be working good now

Just wanted to share my experience with this.
My pavilion dv6 does the same thing as has been described here. I have had other issues on top of this, one being a hard drive failure. My laptop was sent in for repair and a new hard drive was installed under warranty. I still ahve the same problem with new hard drive. Reinstalling all programs does nothing to fix this issue.
I have noticed that when the screen goes black it isn"t completely blank, it is working, but working as if there is no light. If you move your laptop right under a light source, I find bright nattural light, like through a window works best, and try different angles you can see your screen working. The picture is there, just really really dark and looks black. That is why everything runs and if you type in password it does start up.
If you can make out the screen well enough to login and then go to restart after restart the screen will come back to normal. Sometimes I do this and other times I just hold down power button to power off then retart myself in safe mode and then restart again normally.
I do not know what causes this or how to fix it. I would love if anyone could shar how to styop this issue as it is very annoying to go through this process.

Removing of the battery has solved my problem.

having this issue too! mine's pretty random thou. sometimes it is fine, sometimes it is not. i haven't quite pin it down yet, but i think if i wake it from sleep via key press on my keyboard, my screen comes up fine. sometimes if i tried waking it up by moving the mouse, and the screen stayed black. i dont have the battery plugged in, straight power from the wall. still unsure what is the cause, really irritating, brand new for a few months now.

I have pretty much the same problem. All drivers updated, tried system scan, virus scan, malware-scan etc. Tried restoring power options, hybrid sleep disabled.
Problem is as follows:
When choosing shutdown or sleep, display goes black, but still there's light around the mousepad and on the power and wireless buttons, and the computer will not respond to mouse moves or keyboard buttons. Cold start only possibility, whereafter the computer can be started normally and then the sound is gone. Restart works normally (and the sound is back on).
Win 7 home premium 64 bit, Hp Pavilion Dv6 6141
Any help highly appreciated!

Got this fixed! Restored to a previous restore point, and then re-upgraded to the last bios version. Et voila!

Have owned my DV6 since Feb last year.. Since then its ran Win 7 Ultimate, Ubuntu 11.4, 11,10, 12.4 and FreeBSD 9. It has also had each Bios update as and when they appear and I can confirm that I still has this problem/fault..
As others have said its very intermittent and cannot see any patterns as to what might be causing it... Very annoying as I was planning on selling the machine as it has had very little use from new but with this fault I cant feel bad selling it to someone else.. ![]()
