Hi, I'm having the exact same problem with my Pavilion DV6. I have had it since December and the warranty runs out on 23rd Nov. I have tried doing a system restore, removing and re-inserting memory (as per instructions from support), running a hard drive and memory scan (came up clean) and doing the thing you just suggested in Command Prompt. It's still exactly the same. I have noticed that in the last week the fan had been getting quite over enthusiastic, do you think this could be part of the problem?
If the computer actually turns on (normally not) then it will get almost until the login part and the screen will go black, but I can still hear the start-up sounds. This happens every time, I haven't successfully logged into the laptop yet since this happened last night. If I can get it started and load up in safe mode though then it's totally fine.
The support have suggested a motherboard problem? How can I get it fixed if it is still under warranty? I bought the laptop in Singapore and live in the UK, don't know if that is going to be a problem?
Thanks in advance for any advice, this is driving me nuts!!

as far as I can tell this is caused by an ATI Video driver. if you go into Safe Mode and delete the ATI video driver you can opperate in Windows with the Intel video card. However, if you allow Windows updates to replace the video driver the problem immediately returns.

hi ive had this same issue and now have realised that if i have my comp plugged in and it goes into sleep or hibination and i restart it without it plugged in it goes to blank screen and same unplugged to plugged. if you hook it up to a tv you will see your desktop on the screen with it saying switching graphics. make sure if you use hibination or sleep that you rewake it as you left it, plugged in or unplugged. ive spent many times formatting and updating software to no sucsess and lost lots of files and photos by not plugging it into the tv before realising this.
