Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

Hi Everybody! I hope you can help me and thanks in advance for your time.

I just bought a pavilion dv7-3065dx and it freezes when it is almost finished with startup. I see the windows desktop and everything seems fine. I click once and open explorer (or any program) I click another time and it works, but at the third or fourth click the mouse freezes. The mouse pointer appears as if it was processing something (it shows a round sign, that does not disappear) The I am not able to click on anything, not even with the keyboard:

Some troubleshooting advice I tried:

I shutted down the computer, took the battery off, took the power cord out, pressed the power button for 5 seconds, connected the power cord turned the computer on: nothing.

I checked the hard drive, and the hard drive is OK: it did not work (and I suspect the hard drive has to do with that problem)

I did a complete recovery.and it did not work

I uninstalled the ACPI Fixed feature button in the device manager, and it did reinstall itself: it did not work.

The I did a startup repair: it did not work.

Curious thing: If I hibernate the laptop the problem is solved temporarily.

The issue appeared right after the first time I tried to use the laptop.

Customer support is telling me to:

Do a system restore (another, it did not work the first time)

Update the bios (maybe it works, why did they not update the bios, it is a brand new computer! With windows 7)

I will try both, but I do not think that doing it again will work. Simple logic: Right when I opened it was not working right. Restoring will not do anything.

Updating the BIOS, I do not know what it will do. But I will try that.

Any other ideas?

Re: Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

I found a solution that worked: disabling all services that are not microsoft.

What does all that junk do anyway?

"OK guys - here is the solution to this problem. I finally found someone at Microsoft who put this solution together after a whole lot of guesses.

At the Windows start button type in msconfig - when this opens click on the "Services " tab. A long list of services comes up all with ticked boxes. Click on the hide Microsoft Services box then uncheck all the remaining services (I have about 30 most of which you can easily identify). Click on "Apply" then exit and restart your PC.

I found after I did this that the problem went away but of course this is not a final solution as any non Microsoft service is not running. Make sure your Power Settings are set so that the PC does not try to sleep or hibernate and it is a good idea to activate Windows Defender as your Anti Virus & Firewall will not be working if it is third party such as Norton 360 as in my case. Head off and leave your PC for a couple of hours and guess what - on return it will be working as it was when you left.

Now having proved that your PC is working you can now repeat the process above running msconfig - only this time you should enable a few services at a time leaving the Microsft ones enabled and take a note of which ones you have done.  Restart your PC and leave it running for a couple of hours and on return if it is working correctly then select a few more and repeat the process. If not working (frozen) then the culprit will be one of the last few you checked so uncheck this one and restart. Remember that there might be more than one problem service. Once you have identified the problem service or services you can leave this disabled and get on to the 3rd party for a solution. Meanwhile all should be working perfectly on your PC and you can reset your power settings to sleep etc.

The real issue here for Microsoft is that installing or upgrading to Windows 7 involves running a Windows 7 compatability program before the install kicks off and clearly Microsoft have not designed this to work correctly.

Good luck all"

The solution was found at:

Thank god

Re: Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

I got an HP notebook as a gift.  The first time I used it the pointer froze and I hadn't had it for a week. Now the pointer is just sitting, stuck in the middle of the screen and has been that way for several days.  How can I try any of these solutions when the pointer is frozen and u can't click on anything?:smileysad:

Maybe hitting the windows key in the keyboard, writing device manager and then pressing enter. Pluging an external mouse did work for me in the past with other similar issues

Re: Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

I have a Dv7-3020sa that I disabled all the non-MS services on and the **bleep** thing still locked up within 60secs of running up the desktop.  Any other ideas out there?  Looks like I'll be taking it back to the store....

Re: Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

I have a similar problem with my left mouse button.

Having used over 7 different brands of laptops, I find HP to be near the bottom of the barrel in design and quality; I would return my new HP laptop, but got it as a gift. One example of many: the volume control is software based which results in many volume control errors depending on the types of software being used.

Re: Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

Flashing BIOS (which can be downloaded from hp.com/support/) works for me, to unfreeze mouse or lost keyboard function.

I have added posting to seek a better solution.

Re: Pavilion dv7 mouse pointer freezes and nothing can be clicked

Hello,

I own an HP dm3t-3000 and ever since owning it, the mouse (touchpad) has randomly chosen to freeze at least once a day.  I tried all of these:

Update BIOS

Uninstall/Reinstall Windows 7

Update Drivers

Uninstall/Reinstall Drivers

Sent it in to HP Repair

Performed a hard reset

System restore numerous times

etc, etc.

BUT! I have found a temporary solution as of now:

Next time your mouse freezes, try these steps:

1.  Plug the a/c cord into the wall and into your laptop.

2.  With a/c cord plugged into your laptop (charging your laptop), physically remove your battery.

3. Try moving your mouse.  Mouse should move again.

4.  Place battery back into computer.

That's it.  Works for me, it's a temporary fix until I can figure out how, exactly, to make this problem completely stop.
