Presario A900 notebook still freezes often after system recovery

My Presario A900 notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium OS often freezes.  After performing the system recovery from the recovery image on hard disk drive, it still freezes soon after startup.

Is it a software or hardware problem?

Have you tried a check disk? Here's a guide from Microsoft to do that:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-for-errors

 

Or go into the BIOS (press F10 when you see the HP splash screen on bootup) and navigate to the Diagnostics Tab, then select Memory and/or Hard Drive tests and see if either of those return an error.
