Random Black Screen

I have been having this problem for a couple months now.  Sent the dv7 to HP for repairs 3 times!  First two times they just replace the CPU, HDD, and heatsink, then sent it back.  The third time the tech said he ran it for 2 days and could find nothing wrong with it.  Each time I got it back the black screen appeared within two hours of turning the computer on.  The black screen comes randomly, I have not been able to reproduce it, nor have the repair techs.  It seems to happen mostly when browsing the internet, watching a movie, or when the computer is idle.  This is step by step what happens:  I am surfing the internet, and all of a sudden there is 1 second of static in the speakers and at the same time the display cuts out completely and a black screen is left.  The LED's for the touch buttons are still on but will not function, the only thing I can do is power the unit down and then back up again.  I have a Case manager contacting me next week because I am sick of this!  HP tech support is HORRIBLE!  The techs can't even think to maybe check out the minidump files created by the BSOD's I am getting, or the event viewer to check out the random shutdowns.  If anyone can analyse them for me that would be great.  Just ask I can provide any information necessary to get this problem fixed!  It is sad this thing is still under warranty and I have to use my own time (and yours) to fix HP's screwup.

Re: Random Black Screen

I have had a similar problem with Dv7t-1200.  It would freeze, be slow, go black and then start working again. It seemed to happen to another user in the house and was intermittent so I figure it was "operator error" and didn't do anything. Now two months later it I finally figured out it is a bad hard drive. Most of the time it works okay but it we hit that spot it dumps us.   But because I didn't report it to HP while it was "intermittent" they would not cover it under warranty.  Warranty ran out in mid Feb.  This is my second HP to have a hard drive failure just out of warranty so beware.  Now I replaced the hard drive and a week later the screen goes!  LInes in the bottom third of the screen and an inch wide on the left.  Again, all customer service says is "sorry".  I use this 17 inch as a desk top. It is never jostled or transported. These failures are clearly design failures but HP stands on if it is 12 months or older you are out of luck. I have three more lap tops to buy but they won't be HP.  They just are not reliable.

I hope you have better luck than I do with HP.  And I bought mine direct from them so there would be no question for service.  I can't even find anyone to look at this screen problem.

Don't let them wear you down until you are out of the warranty period!

Re: Random Black Screen

In January I bought an HP TouchSmart 600.1050it, I continuously get a black screen. I have sent the **bleep** thing three times to be repaired, but I can get no improvement. I thought the problem was coming from Google, but even when that was disconnected the black screen came again. Sometimes I can work for hours without problems, then it starts and goes blank three or four times in a row...,.Any suggestion?

Re: Random Black Screen

Oi!

I am having the same problem with the TouchSmart tx2!!! I bought it in August of 09 and just in the last few weeks I have been having the black screen of doom and gloom! I find that the longer I leave the laptop turned off, the more time I have before the screen goes black.  My LED's are also on but not responsive. The flashing light (looks like 3 discs, next to the power and lightning bolt light on the monitor) will no longer flash. I am very very frustrated because I just flew out of the US to a position in Brazil for the summer and I depend on my laptop for work. I have no idea what to do or if HP has a free international help line. Any suggestions?!?!?!

Thank you for your time!

Re: Random Black Screen

Hi there, I've just logged onto HP as my laptop is doing the same - freezing and a black screen although the lights are still on.  I then have to shut it down and re-start it.  I only bought my laptop in Oct in the UK but now live in Spain.

Just wondered if you got your problem sorted as it would be an ordeal for me to have to take back to UK and be without it? Any info would help.

Thanks.

Re: Random Black Screen

Hi, I am wondering if you can help me as well. I have had my HP for 2.5yrs. About two weeks ago, after an HP update, my screen goes black after about 20min. Everything lights up but no screen. Sometimes it gives a weird, random beep after I have logged on and am trying to open or close a window. I have to hold down the power button and restart it. If I can catch it right as the screen turns black, it will come back on, but if I walk away and it goes black for an unknown amount of time I cannot get the screen to turn back on. I have tried going to uninstall programs that may be harmful but there are none. I hit the "restore to a time when your computer worked correctly" button and that did nothing.

Re: Random Black Screen

My laptop has started to do the same thing and i bought mine about 2yrs ago. At random moments the screen will suddenly blackout and the sound will go, but once i re-boot the computer its fine for a few days or even weeks. Im going to uni soon so i need to know if this is going to get worse and what i could do. I have already lost A level work because of this problem and cant afford a new laptop  for uni.
