Random Lockups

Hi Guys,

Only 1 week ago I purchased a Compaq Presario CQ62-217AX from a local electrical retailer. However the minute I took the laptop out of the box and turned it on I had issues with random lockups etc. I checked online for answers with very limited success. So I checked the event viewer and the error message came up as:

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

Source: amdsata

Event ID: 129

There are multiple entries of this warning which all coincide with the laptop freezing up. When it does lock up I can move the mouse and switch between windows but everything stops responding for about 2/3 minutes.

The general answer I got from online seemed to be that changing the RAID controller in the BIOS from AHCI to IDE should solve it with very little in the way of performance loss. However I see no option in the BIOS to do so.

Anyone got any ideas!

Re: Random Lockups

Is there an option in regards to SATA Native Mode?

No I see no option to change SATA native mode anywhere in the BIOS. Or anything to do with SATA, IDE or AHCI anywhere at all. There only seems to be settings for boot order and a diagnostic tool.

    Re: Random Lockups

I was getting this error on an HP g62 435dx.  I tried a number of driver updates, updated to the new bios ... no luck.

Finally, I changed the sata driver from the amdsata to the generic windows 7 ahci driver and it seems to have fixed the problem.

If you want to try it, go to Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers->Sata Driver.  Choose "Update Driver"->"Browse my computer for Driver Software"->"Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" and then choose the "Standard AHCI 1.0" driver.

Note: I haven't done an A/B comparison on hard drive performance between the two drivers but there has been no noticeable change in performance (CrystalDiskMark gives me about 80 MB/s which, it seems to me, is fine for a 5400 rpm drive).

    Anyway, good luck.

    Re: Random Lockups

HP G62-367DX Notebook PC that would randomly stop responding for minutes at a time, found the entries below listed in the Event Viewer during the periods of no response.

Event ID:  129 amdsata "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued."

AMD SATA Controller:  1.2.0.164 (10/7/2009) BAD

Uninstalled the AMD driver from the Device Manager and let the generic MS drivers install upon reboot and the problem was solved.  Set the Driver Installation settings to never intall driver updates for the system.

Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller: 6.1.7600.16385 (6/21/2006)  GOOD

I just tried this also for a G62-435DX.  So far so good - will know in a day or two if it is resolved.

    Re: Random Lockups

Hi, I installed the standard AHCI  1.0 serial ATA controller, but I'm still having the same issues.  It is very clearly the disk driver as every time the machine locks up I can see the hard drive usage light on with no interruption.  Any ideas what else I should do?  Do I need to do something uninstall the AMD driver, beyond installing the standard ahci driver?
