Why does my display Blackouts

 I have a Compaq Presario F755. I am vey content with my laptop .Everytime I turn on my laptop now etheir the display is not backlit or within 2 to3 minutes display backlight goes out. I press the power button to go into sleep mode  and reawaken it and everything appears to be fine only to have the display blackout again. i have to do this cycle 5-6 times in order for the display to function properly. This is annoying.  I at a lost. What appears to be the problem.
