Windows won't start, startup repair hangs.Unable to perform new install.

Hi,

I am using a G72 250US laptop running windows 7 home 64 bit. A few weeks ago windows suddenly stopped starting. I do not remember making any drastic changes to my laptop the night before I had used it , neither did I install any programs that I can remmber.

Windows won't start under any option (i.e safe mode, last known good config, repair etc).It will either hang or restart itself. The error in the blue screen when it restarts itself is as below

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0*000000ED (0*FFFFFA8004A6CCD0,0*FFFFFFFFC0000185,0*0000000000000000,0*0000000000000000)

I tried the advanced diagnostic options during startup options and the startup test and har disk test fails.

I tried to repair my windows using a recovery disk but it wont do anything even though I changed boot option to read from DVD/ROM .Basically the same scenario repeats.

So I got myself a windows bootable DVD today and when I get my laptop to start from the dvd windows does load. But thats all it does. After booting it gives me two options to either repair my machine or perform an install. When I try to repair my machine , it simply hangs at the same screen and remains that way forever.

When I try to perform an install it gets stuck at "Setup is starting"  and reamains there for 7-8 hours after which I switch off my machine.I believe that my hard disk or MBR  have malfunctioned in some way.

But here is the twist, I also run a Ubuntu 11.10 on the same C drive using a wubi installation. And even today I can login and work fine with Ubuntu and even access my Windows folders from my Ubuntu login. So if my hard diks have malfuntioned how is it that Ubuntu is still working, I still do not understand.

But I need to get my Windows up and working or the bare minimum format and perform a clean install. But at the moment I am not able to do anything except using Ubuntu.

Someone  please help me out.

Is you laptop out of warranty?  if so you're going to have to open the laptop and extract the HD.

requirements:

extra desktop/external that is switchable/openable enclosure (sata/ide depending on the HD in the laptop)

easeus partition master 9.1.0 master home edition

open up your laptop (youtube it or google the manual) and extract the HD

determine the type of connection that your HD is sata or ide

write down the name of your laptop's HD (westinghouse, samsung etc) and the size of your laptop's DH

determine if you can connect it to your desktop via opening and connecting the laptops hd to your desktop or via external openable enclosure

download easeus partition master 9.1.0 master home edition

install partition master

open parition master

click on go to main screen

find the HD of you laptop try using the name that you wrote down earlier and looking for the size that is around the same size (for example if you laptop is 500 gb then look for an hd with around 478 most companies split your hd into two or more partitions due to restore files etc)

click on the laptop drive where it says disk 2(should be drive 2 if you are using only one physical hard drive)

look to the left hand side that now that your laptop drive is selected

select rebuild MBR

Now click on apply

wait until it finishes

exit partition master

shut down computer

remove laptop computer from desktop or external

reinstall laptop hd to the laptop

turn on and it should work...  I've done this countless times!

Good luck!

Re: Windows won't start, startup repair hangs.Unable to perform new install.

Hiren's Boot Cd. Had the same problem. Was able to fix a few things and at least access my files for backup, and successfully installed windows again. It has a bazillion tools it may seem confusing or overwhelming but it works I promise. The iso is free. Burn it to a cd or dvd and set your computer to boot from cd first. And Good luck I'll check back in to see how you're doing.
