Hi,
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.

My first thoughts are hard drive or memory. If you have two pieces of memory, try running on just one piece and also try each slot. Then try the other piece. If you only have one piece at least try the other slot. When changing memory please remove the battery and the power adaptor first. Try to get into the HP utilities and run the hard drive and memory test. Try to run without the battery installed and just the power adaptor. Try the hard reset:

Memory test was ok.
Hard disk short test is ok.
Hard disk long test stops at 8% with the message: Hard Disk 1 Full (305)

That is saying that your hard disk is failing with the possible exception if it is full and there is no space. Do you only have one drive that is split into two partitions? Do you actually have two hard drives? This is the time to back any important files like pictures, documents to an external hard drive. The sooner you have someone clone the existing hard drive over to a new drive the greater you chances of getting your drive back as it was.

I do not think there are two drives here.
Pardon my ignorance, but how can I back up the hard drive with the notebook freezing immediately after loading?

Hi,
The 305 error is a failure of the comprehensive ( full ) Disk Self Test ( DST ) and does indicate your HDD will need to be replaced.
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below. The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ). When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your existing files.
Regarding replacing your Hard Drive, it's pretty straight forward. The drive on the link below is an example of one that would be fine for your notebook.
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 43 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive.
If you don't have your Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

You might also want to try to attach the drive to a desktop and see if someone familiar with computers could use ghost with ignore errors flag enabled to try to copy your hard drive to a good drive. They could also try to just read your hard drive and copy any files to the host computer's hard drive assuming they have the space.
