I still have half of my hard drive free, I just did a virus scan (I also have anti-virus protection), I cleaned out my registry and I update my laptop every time it tells me to (either through windows update or HP support assistant). It usually happens when I'm playing music on iTunes or watching a DVD. It only lasts about four seconds but it makes this buzzing noise and it's incredibly annoying. Also, my laptop is only about 2 1/2 years old. No error messages are ever presented. I made no changes before this started happening. What am I doing wrong

Hi,
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.
If both the above tests pass, try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'. In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start. Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take a couple of hours to complete before loading back into Windows.
When windows has fully reloaded, it may also be worth using Recovery Manager to reinstall your AMD Graphics Driver - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the document on the link below.
After the reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook again.

DP-K

Hi,
Thanks a lot for your help, unfortunately it didn't work. There were no errors on any of the tests, which is good! However when I tried to reinstall my graphics driver I've been having some trouble; it wasn't on the list of programs on the recovery manager list and the instructions for if it isn't on the list tell me I need the original software to reinstall it--but it came with my computer
I apologize if I'm just being dumb and don't understand what you told me to do, but I'm lost!

Hi,
Try downloading and installing the ATI Graphics driver on the link below.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49501-50000/sp4951
After the installation has completed, restart the notebook.

I have a G62 too and I have experienced the same problem that you are having now. I am convinced that the problem comes from one or a combination of the Windows Updates. I still dont know which one(s) but you can prove it yourself by doing this.
1. Do a clean install with your recovery disk to restore your loptop to factory settings.
2. Disable automatic windows update. (start-control panel - system security - windows update-turn automatic updating on/off- click on the important updates drop bar and choose never check for updates" ) You will be informed that this is not recommended but you can turn it on later if you are not convinced.
3. Register your product with HP and do all the recommended HP Support Assistant updates exept the Windows Updates. Some HP applications like the Support Assistant and HP Games might take a long time to open( and might seem to freeze) the first time that you use them but but if you allow them to load normally, you will experience a noticeable improvement the next time you use them.
4. You can install other programs that you normaly need and observe if you will experice hangs and freezes as before. I bet there will be none as long as you keep your automatic update disabled.
You can folow this thread, it deals with the same problem and I have several posts there.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Lockups-Free

Save your files on a removable media before doing a clean reinstall, it will erase all your hard disk data

I was having this same issue. I started with the BIOS "scan" solution. I got an error at the beginning of my hard drive scan.
