i have a dv-7 4169wm BIOS update failed, now I get a black screen

I have a dv7 4169 wm with Windows 7 Home Premium x64.  I downloaded and ran the  bios update version:f.27.  Half way through the process the screen froze.  Well, eventually the battery died.  Now that I have the AC plugged in whenever I turn it on I just get a black screen and the caps lock key blinks twice.  I'm pretty sure the BIOS is hosed.  I've been trying to get a usb thumb drive to boot and re flash the BIOS, but I've not been able to get it to work.
