issues with g72 laptop- hard disk error

I've been having issues with my g72 notebook laptop since we got it. Every time we load it is says "hard disk error (301)" I spent time with customer support and couldn't make heads or tails of what she was telling me

By the way it is a g72-253NR and we ran an f2 check and it worked for a short period of time, but stopped working again

Re: issues with g72 laptop- hard disk error

Hi,

The 301 error is a failure of the short disk test on the Hard Drive and would indicate the drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

If your notebook is under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have this replaced under warranty.

If you live in the US, contact HP Here.

If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

If you're out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing this yourself, please let me know.

Regards,

DP-K

Re: issues with g72 laptop- hard disk error

A question I have though is why it worked for a short time then stopped working. Does this have something to do with the battery recall in may of 2011? The computer runs very hot on the bottom.

Re: issues with g72 laptop- hard disk error

Hi,

A failing Hard Drive can be very unpredictable - it can carry on working for months with a few crashes and freezes or it can just fail entirely leaving the PC unable to boot at all.

I can't see this is related to the battery recall - but if the drive is having physical problems spinning-up, this may well generate excess heat.  Is the hot area underneath the notebook where the Hard Drive is located?

Regards,

Re: issues with g72 laptop- hard disk error

Hi,

Well this just further confirms that the problem is with the Hard Drive - as I mentioned before, if your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP to get it replaced.  If you're out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing this yourself, please let me know.

Regards,
