short dst on a HP Pavilion dv7-6343 cl

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-6343 cl that has a 'short DST' failure.  After doing a quick search, I see many of the same problems, and the solution seems to be installing a new hard drive.  Am I correct on that, and if so, how is the best way to do that?  Will I have to get a new operating system too?

A short DST means that your Hard Drive has died or is in the process of dying. While this is frustrating it's common for all computers HDDs(HDD is shorthand for Hard Drive Disk) to fail. 

In answer to you question, No you do not have to get a new operating system, it does mean you'll have to get the HDD replaced. If you have a Dv7 you have at least a 1 year if not a 2 year warranty on it, thus you need to call the 1-800-474-6836 (1-800-HPInvent) and talk to a consumer notebook tech support.

They will make you jump through a few troubleshooting hoops to get a "Failure Code" this tells the tech specifically what kind of failure your HDD has experienced. 

From there the process is pretty painless, they can send you a new HDD and Disk with Windows and the original programs loaded on there at no cost to you. (Warranty covers this sort of thing)

Or if you request if you are not comfortable replacing it yourself (it's pretty easy) to have them send a box to you with a prepaid shipping label to have HP replace the HDD and reload windows onto it.

Just because your HDD failed doesn't mean you have to buy windows again, you already own a copy on your computer, it just had a failed HDD. Which is all replaced by your warranty.
