shows logo then goes to a screen with flashing command prompt and stays.sometimes goes back to logo.

HP Pavilion G72-259WM. Windows 7. No error message. Only flashing command prompt. Stays on command prompt. Sometimes on hard reboot will loop from HP logo to command prompt every few seconds. Tried system restore but only goes to command prompt. Tried all tests in the start up menu and everything passed. May have installed a program with a virus. No new hardware.

Hi,

When you say command prompt are you talking about a Black Screen with a blinking Cursor. If it is the blinking cursor issue and if you have tried most of the troubleshooting tests then you will need the recovery disks to fix it.

If you do not have the disks you can order them online or directly call HP technical support.

The link below will guide you to order them online:

Re: shows logo then goes to a screen with flashing command prompt and stays.sometimes goes back to l

I just had the same problem today. I was browsing Internet and my laptop shut off. I felt the bottom and it was super hot, even though the fans were unblocked and I wasnt doing any serious computing. I had the same startup problem you did, so I hit ctrl alt del and then esc to get to the startup menu. After running all of the diagnostic tests, I found the failure: failure id: Q89020-571631-XD003F-407703.
Product id: VX067AV memory module.

Hi,

It seems one of the memory module in your notebook needs a replacement. If you have two memory modules in the system then you can try one memory at a time to find out which one is faulty.

It is easy to remove the memory modules and you can follow the instructions in the link below and check.

HP Pavilion dv6 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide ›

{ This guide includes the steps to replace the memory module under the following section: Component Removal Procedures=> Part Removal Procedures => Memory Module }

How to Upgrade and Install RAM Memory

First try one memory at a time, then swap the positions and try each memory in each slot. It'll help you to identify which memory is faulty or if the memory slot is faulty.

Depending on that you can call technical support and get the memory replaced if the notebook is still under warranty.

I did as instructed an my laptop still will not start up. Does that mean that both my chips are faulty? Is it possible for the chips to be fine, and the ports to be faulty?

Yes..it could be the memory slot or memory controller issue. Because if you have two memory modules it is very unlikely that both memory cards will go bad together.

You can call technical support for hardware replacement if still under warranty..

OK, I have been navigating the HP site for about an hour now looking for any way to contact HP support, and have found nothing. I don't care if it's via email, phone, or chat, I just need to talk to somebody. My laptop is less than 2 years old and it is a brick right now, I need it fixed. Every link I click on just asks me to take a stupid survey and the closest thing I can find to support is the customer forums.
