What is the model of your notebook? Does this USB mass storage device work fine on other units? I would recommend you to update the latest BIOS for your notebook from the support and driver download page on hp.com and check if this helps resolve the issue. If the issue persists, try to uninstall the USB Root hubs in the device manager and restart your notebook, and check if this helps.
