touch pad

I tried the solution given re: Synaptics Pointing device but that file is not listed in my relevant control panel folder. I do have a thing called Alps, which appears to be the touch pad, says it's for 14" LCD screen, plugged into PS2 mouse thing. Since it's built in, I can't verify where it's plugged i n, but the touch pad does work.

I am having a similar problem, where the pointer goes off somewhere into the ozone, won't follow my touch and I feel like I'm trying to coax an unwilling toddler up to a dish of cauliflower or something, like it's right next to but doesn't want to go to my target item. Sometimes it just takes off and goes all over the place. This often results in it accidentallly (or on purpose?) activating an application I don't want and makes a mess.

I would be happy to delete something and then re-install something, but I don't have the Synaptics pointer thingie, so I don't want to uninstall anything else either.

I have a Pavilion notebook DV4t-1600, don't know what else you need to identify it. I don't think I have what it takes to try out ALL the solutions given but obviously either I don't have a Synaptics pointer or it's located somewhere I can't find it. I did download the app provided but now I'm afraid to use it.

How can you-all help me?

Thanks very much.
