I'm currently attempting to rebuild a laptop using the USB Media ordered from HP.  Every attempt has failed and I keep getting the same error:

The recovery attempt has failed. Select one of the following buttons:

When I choose DETAILS, I get the followig message:

There might be unexpected reboot during [Windows setup].
The process will cause CTO panic
Because the image might not be normal now…

I'm stuck here and can't seem to find a way around it.  I attempted to use the process and software from SP72876 and that yielded no results.  I'm following the instructions that came with the System Recovery USB.  (Fifth Edition: October 2016).  Has anyone encountered this and can recommend a work around?

Thank  you.

Unfortunately yes this is not unheard of. Why not just download the correct Windows 10 version from the Media Creation Tool and then find any drivers you need here on this site? If the laptop had Windows 10 ever activated you do not need the HP restore media. It will just activate on reinstall.

The hard drive has been reformatted and before I started the recovery process using the USB, the owner had not created his own media, and had locked out his admin account among other things which prevented us from getting to the tool before we started the recovery process.  I really need a method that will allow me to use the media that was purchased from HP to complete the recovery.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

Thank you.

The media (usb disk) is bad so there is no method to use a bad usb stick. Do you have access to another computer where you can make an install disk from Microsoft Media Creation Tool?
