Hello.

My BIOS is password-protected but I do not know the password. I tried to answer a set of security questions provided by HP Spare Key Recovery, but to no avail. Is there a way to reset the password other then clearing the CMOS? I am trying to make a clean Windows 8 installation, but computer refuses to boot from DVD or USB.

Thank you.

Try entering a wrong password 3 times & see if you get an error/halt code.

If so use the error/halt code on link below to generate a master bios password that may allow entry to the BIOS & you can then change or turn off the password function as you wish.

See I never get a chance to get to error code, thanks to HP Spare Key Recovery. After three failed attempts to enter the right bios password, HP Spare Key takes over and I am sked three security questions. After failing to answer those, I am given notice that Spare Key was not successful and only thing I am allowed to do is to turn the computer off. I do not recall setting up the BIOS password or the security questions.

I guess your model is business series Compaq so no halt code option, hp maybe able help but if not bios chip replacement or hacking is required .

Wow. This is rough.

Meanwhile, I have contacted HP. Their advice is:

1/ Make a system “disk” from your USB stick using HPUSBFW.exe
2/ Copy a utility called HPREADID.exe to this USB
3/ Remove a harddrive from your computer
4/ When computer boots from the USB stick, run the HPREADID.exe utility to find an UUID of your computer.
5/ With known UUID there is a chance to reset the BIOS pasword.

The problem is, this machine doesn't feel like booting from any external device whatsoever. My attemt to boot from  “system” USB resulted in message “Non system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready”.

Am I lost? Certainly not.

Let's pretend this is Edward Snowden's machine. Any ideas please?

Ptak.

There are no master password generators for ProBooks or EliteBooks and most business class laptops.

If you can boot and still access a Windows OS try this first.

1. HP BIOS Configuration Utility.

 User guide here.

 http://ftp.hp.com/pub/capssoftpaq/cmit/whitepapers/BIOS_Configuration_Utility_User_Guide.pdf

 If not then try this.

2. Contact HP.

3. Or look at this link.

 http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49497-HP-Probook-Elitebook-BIOS-Password-Reset-Utility

Mazzif’s program will detect your UUID, Serial Number and model number then use that information to produce an .exe file to clear the password.

If you find it to be too technical then.

4. Replace the BIOS chip.

If you have good soldering skills order the BIOS chip. You will receive a picture of the chips location after purchase.
