So what is the difference in Linux vs Windows
HP Recommended

Linux is still being updated, XP isn't.

XP is Windows and easy. Linux Mint Cinnamon is not hard, but it isn't Windows.

Overall, using Mint is a little more like a Mac than it is like Windows -- but without a Mac's smooth polish.

Installing new stuff on Windows is a no-brainer.  If you're not a techie, installing stuff in Linux can (but not always)  make you feel like you've become your own grandmother.

Windows is a resource hog, Linux is a prancing unicorn that runs easily on underpowered gizmos like HP Mini 110.

Looks like a good option to play with as something new. Guess I will have to buy s portable drive to try it. Does it run word and excel?

No; MS Office does not run in Linux.  You can use the compatible Open Office programs as usable alternative.  Data files are compatible and portable, back and forth.

Good luck!
