I'd try calling HP directly, as this service should still be available, regardless of warranty.

Hi,

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any 3rd party utilities that work with this particular Model, however if you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

Thanks, for the advice but the warranty is long expired...

Hi,

Business Support should still be able to send you a smc.

I tried to start a chat but they asked for a serial number.  I couldn't find the serial number on the bottom of the notebook.  The label just wan't there for some reason.  I used a serial number extracted from the BIOS configure but it was rejected.   As such, I couldn't progress any further with the chat.

HP Recommended

Hi,

Try tapping f1 as you power on as all the required info should be listed there.

I finally found the serial number in the BIOS System Information page which matches a serial number on a tag hidden inside the battery compartment.  That serial number is not accepted for starting a live chat because the warranty is void for a couple of years.

They need an invoice copy which had been lost. So, they can't help any further and I gave up. Thanks again.

You're welcome and sorry to hear that they couldn't help.

All the best,
