Anything mechanical-including hard drives- can and will fail eventually. Laptop hhd's are more prone to failures that desktop machines. Mainly due to extreme heat build up in the small case,imo.Also more susceptible to damage from being transported.

 

One big plus to buying and installing a retail hdd is you get a longer warranty. For instance Western Digital Blue for $50 and you get a 3 yr warranty:

For $5 more a Western Digital Black has a 5 yr warranty:

To try and recover important files your best hope would be to remove the hdd and install it into a USB Enclosure. Then plug it into a usb port of a working machine. Depending on if ,and how much, life is left in the drive you should be able to browse the drive and copy files over to host machine. I have had some good results with this in the past.

So I walked away defeated last night and left it on. Just came back to it this morning and the **bleep** thing is working. I don't understand.
