Thank you CharlesITSRippon. Your fix works beautifully. No data lost.
When I opened the HDD cover I noticed that the HDD was not screwed down to its base. There are three screw holes in the HDD assembly that look like they are meant to hold it down, but on my G70 laptop the screws were missing, so the only thing holding the HDD was the electrical connector - I think the HDD works its way loose from the connector from time to time.
Must go fix my backup sequence now...

I have the DV5-1000us and I have the same problem. I tried to remove/reinstall the hard drive and it did not work. The laptop still can't detect the hard drive. Any other solutions? Is HP going to do anything about this?

I have been having the same problem every time a critical windows update installs on my computer.
You can try this to get your computer restarted. Assuming you have gotten the error message, press and hold down the power button, once the computer shuts off, keep holding the button down for 30 seconds. This clears the memory. Now start your computer and press the "esc" (escape) key. This should take you to a menu screen. Use your up and down key to select "safe mode" then press enter. Once the computer starts up in safe mode, click on start and type in "system restore" . Select "System Restore" , once System Restore comes up, check the box that says "show more restore points" . Select a date when you know your computer was running perfect. Follow the instructions.
If your computer restarts normally, If not, then try a different restore date. Once you are able to start your computer normally, then your should create a "System Repair Disc" . Trust me, it will take some time, but it will save you a lot of time and money in the future. Besides, if you get the same error message in the future, and you probably will, simply insert the "System Repair Disc" in your CD/DVD drive and restart your computer. It will start up normally.
To create a System Repair disc, clcik on "Start" then type in "System Repair Disc" then clcik on "Create a System Repair Disc" and follow the instructions.

I have done that with my HP Dv7 several times and it still does not seem to work. I also replaced my hdd and reinstalled the OS and it still continues to mess up. I think HP should try to investigate this issue.

i read of all the posts in this site and found that all of us has the same problem. i got the same error messege. my laptop is hp pavilion dv6-3019wm. i tried to remove hdd and all the connections associated with it and reconnected. but it did not work and showed the same messege.
we can conclude from these comments that HP has some problem with hp dv-6 laptops. i bought it 1 and half years ago. i am a university student and i was crazy about hp laptops before. but after all these **bleep**s, i am done with hp products. i am not even buying a single hp products from now. I will also discourage all my friends and realtives not to buy HP products anymore.
i was planning to buy new harddisk. but i saw posts that buying new harddisk also didn't work. Now i am helpless about what to do with my laptop. i think i'll freely donate it to HP company for thier great discovery.
i will not believe in HP until and unless they do something about this common problem.

Coming here to read all these even make sit worse for me. I have exactly the same problem. HP Dv6-2150us just about 1.5yrs old.
The laptop was working normally and then I tried booting it last week, it tookm forever and then afterwards gave me a blue screen with some crazy write-ups and then gave me another with the error in question *Boot device not .......*
I have done almost everything, still same issue. The guys I took it to think it might be motherboard issue and that in that case, no need to do any further work on it. I am heart-broke at the moment, I am doing my master's thesis, all my documents, I mean everything is there and I can't even use it to do my research work. I have been rendered useless for about 2 weeks now and still counting.
Please who has a solution to this, help me before I run crazy, well I am almost there but help a brother plssss.
As for HP, I have no words for them yet

I have the same problem however I have the DM1 Pavilion. I cannot do the hard disk test because when I do it says- Hard Disk does not exist.
It is (3FO) too.
I wanted to email HP however I cant do this because my warenty has run out...
My notebook was working fine, but I did accedently trip over the wire for the AC Adapter, and the laptop fell, would this have caused it?
I would really apprecate if you contacted back ASAP...

You might want to try this. I have found that I can get the "No Boot Device Found" "No Operating System" and other messages if I restart my computer instead of turning it off and then restarting the computer. If holding down the OFF/ON button for 30 seconds after your computer turns off doesn't work and you still get the same error message, then try this. ! Remove the battery from your computer and have the AC charger plugged in. Start up your computer. When you get the error message, press and hold the OFF/ON button for 30 seconds after your computer turns off. It is important that you hold the button down to drain whatever residual electrical charge that might remain from the computer. Unplug your computer and let it sit for 30 seconds. Then plug the computer back in and turn it on. Let it do a normal start-up and cross your fingers. My computer usually will start-up like nothing happened.
Sorry but I don.t have any experience with dropping my computer, so I have no idea how the smart drive protection works.
