Re: Both Shift keys are not working

@Mohan_Katta,

I would like you to test the shift keys in safe mode.

  • Shut down the computer
  • When you turn the computer back on tap the F8 key
  • It should lead you to an advanced boot options menu
  • Select safe mode with networking
  • Once in safe mode open  word document or note pad
  • See if the shift keys work there.

Once that has been tested go ahead and restart the comptuer

Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

Thanks

Re: Both Shift keys are not working

I have a

HP Pavilion dv6-7050ea Entertainment Notebook PC
serial no [Personal Information Removed]
product no B1K51EA#ABU
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1
System BIOS F.28

A few days ago I did the BIOS update shown as important by HP support Assistant.

Now both shift keys only work on part of the keyboard i.e.

!"£$%^&*()__+

QWERTYUIOP

GH

BN

Other keys produce no character when the shift key is used. Caps Lock works normally which is how I am getting capitals here.

Pressing shift 5 times turns on sticky keys so there is nothing wrong with the shift keys per se.

The keyboard driver claims to be functioning properly.

On-screen keyboard works fine.

I ran a System restore to before the BIOS update but that caused chaos - the system claimed LPK.dll to be missing and most software would not open. Fortunately an undo returned me to where I was.

I have run sfc (system file checker) but that has not solved it.

It seems most likely that the BIOS update is faulty. There are others on the web reporting recent similar problems with shift keys and HP laptops.

HP live chat does not recognise my model or product number.

Please help.

I am, of course, a few weeks past the warranty date.  Please help.

Re: Both Shift keys are not working

Hello epigejos. I understand the Shift keys are not working correctly. I located a thread online that contains troubleshooting on the issue. It is a good place to commence: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/41011-63-windows-shift-keys-working

If this doesn't resolve the issue, let me know and I will continue troubleshooting. I'm only here to help!

Re: Both Shift keys are not working

I THINK I HAVE THE SOLUTION!

My cousin told me he had experienced this on his HP laptop once and he solved it finding the "on screen" or "virtual" keyboard. He just selected shift on the virtual keyboard and it started working on the physical keyboard too.

I really doubted this would work as none of the forums had suggested this but guess what... it actually worked. Hoorah! please let me know if this works for you too

Re: Both Shift keys are not working

Sadly, no. Currently using the OSK routinely but the physical one still has the same problem. Thanks, anyway.

Re: Both Shift keys are not working

I have solved this by disabling the MS Office 2010 plugins from both Google Chrome and MS Internet Explorer (one might have done - not going to find out!). I found that this had worked for someone else at

http://forums.cnet.com/7723-13974_102-384944/some-laptop-keyboard-letters-only-work-with-shift-key/

I have no problem with these add-ons on my Acer Aspire so there appears to be a compatibility issue with HP and Dell (to which the above post refers).

Re: Both Shift keys are not working

It stopped working me again. HP have arranged to replace my keyboard now.
