We have a Compaq Mini Netbook CQ10-100-CTO, and, since we are such non-techie beginners at computing, "Chapter 4: Backup and Recovery" in "Notebook Essentials", the booklet that came with it, has us sort of terrified and definitely confused.
It's pretty much out of the question to buy an external hard drive, however we did get an external optical drive with Nero.
Could we, instead of the Roxio BackOnTrack and the SoftPaq, use Nero BackItUp to create a set of backup discs ? I don't suppose HP would have an instruction sheet for doing that ...
Would it be better to use CDs or DVDs ? I have the impression that CDs are more reliable, but would it require a great many CDs, and would that be a problem ?
Would we still have to download the "Disaster Recovery Utility SoftPaq"? And if so, what would be the smallest capacity USB flash drive we could use ? It says, "for optimum performance, the capacity of the drive should be no larger than 2GB", but it doesn't say if you'd be likely to find a flash drive whose capacity would be too small. ( I imagine we'd try for a 1GB.) Would the SoftPaq thing fit on a CD or DVD, or does it have to be on a flash drive ?
Why do they say they require a flash drive thing as well as a set of discs ? Why can't whatever is needed all just go on the discs ?
Googling "Disaster Recovery Utility SoftPaq" and reading postings on the HP Support Forum makes me wonder if I should just give up and start using the netbook. I have very little time to work on a computer. I've had to keep putting off using the new one, not wanting to without the backup discs, and do things on our laptop, until now it's been more than a year.
When we first got it I spent hours getting it updated, but the Disaster Recovery part had me flummoxed. I searched to see if HP had discs I could buy, but they don't supply Windows XP discs. I couldn't break through the wall at "Contact us" to send HP an email, ( I can't figure out why, ) so found the Support Forum. Before posting anything, I wanted to set up an email account for non-personal things, as recommended in a book, and finally got that done, but time kept passing.
I wonder if I'd do the processes correctly, either creating the discs or restoring the system if something happened.
What does one do if you don't have Disaster Recovery discs and you have a Disaster ? Would you have permanently lost all your documents, and the operating system ? Would one then give up on WinXP and replace the operating system with a free one ? And would that be a process one could carry out ?
Thank you very much.
