SOrry if this is posted in the wrong category....

I've never encountered such a headache trying to reinstall drivers for a laptop. Let alone the search to just figure out WHICH LAPTOP I AM WORKING ON.

this serial #[edited Serial Number by Moderator] leads me to this page -

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5094...

I've downloaded and installed, reinstalled, removed, and installed again ALL OF THE DRIVERS listed here for my client's DV6. Nothing works. I've tried roughly twelve-fifteen different downloads and triumph has escaped me.

NOW-

ever since I installed the driver from this page - (being the closest match to my client's machine)...

 http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5094...

...the "Network Controller" alert (yellow bang icon) in the device manager has disappeared, yet the wifi still doesn't work....

is there a driver to allow the function keys to work? I've found in the past that this enabled me to turn on the wireless on other manufacturers' machines.

also- the device manager is alerting me that i need drivers for "PCI simple communications controller" and some "Unknown Device".

am I searching with the serial wrong?

is support discontinued for this model(under 5 years old)?

is this an easier fix than i expected?

thanks ahead of time

Hi:

That is indeed the support and driver page for the product number you posted.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=5094557&sw_lang=

You need this driver for the PCI simple communications controller:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-94331-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...

You need this driver for the unknown device, probably.  Without the hardware ID, I can only guess on that one.

This driver is not listed on that support page.

There is software to work the Fn Keys...this one...

thank you!

after my initial post, i found a chipset driver that did something (?) and I went in the BIOS and disabled the action keys, this enabled me to use the Fn key to turn on WiFi again.

halfway there! 🙂

gonna install the drivers you linked... I'll let u know how that goes.

thanks for the quick response

You're very welcome.

If that protectsmart driver does not work, then I will need the hardware ID for that device.

Since you repair PC's for a living, I assume you know where to find the hardware ID for any device needing a driver.

Thanks Fellas

sorry about the serial number.

I don't repair laptops for a living. i have enough tech-challenged people in my immediate circles, that I end up making a few bucks here and there; rebooting and finding drivers and easy solutions for their machines on a regular basis.

The HP seems to be doing ok, although we havent tried to integrate it wih the entertainment setup at my aunt's house. we'll see.

again, thanks for the quick responses and adequate solutions!

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

When you know the hardware ID for a device you can easily find the drivers for it.

Here is a guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device...
