After installing Windows 7 on my nw8440 I cannot access my SD card in the built-in reader and I cannot access the internal hard drive I have in an external case and connected by USB. I can connect to my MyBook but not this other hard drive. FYI I installed Windows 7 as a fresh install and used the transfer program to import my settings and files. I think I need drivers for these devices but I cannot get my computer to see a problem and HP does not offer Windows 7 drivers for nw8440. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm also experiencing problems with windows 7 on my Compaq nw8440. I'm unable to find drivers for ati firegl graphics card, and as a result the max screen resolution available in windows 7 is 1600*1200, while the display is 1900*1200. Any tips as to how I can fix this?

Your original Vista driver will work under Windows 7 too. Download link below:
Texas Instruments Media Card Reader here
From this what I remember You don't need to install it in Compatibility Mode, but if there will be any problem use it and this problem will be solved.
MyBook HDD problem:
You will need to install software for this device first. I'm not sure which model You've got some I will give You here link to software for all models.
If You have other problems let me know about it.
If You still have problem with finding drivers then write me which graphic card You've got.

User eon_no found driver for his graphic card through Windows Update.
He found in device manager that he still need drivers for three things.
Device 2: Mass storage contoller
Both this things are hardware ids of card reader. Driver which is posted below solved them:
Texas Instruments Media Card Reader here
This was HP 3D DriveGuard. He downloaded latest version (18.104.22.168) through Windows Update.
1.Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking ' All Programs ', and then clicking ' Windows Update '.
2.In the left pane, click ' Check for updates ', and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
3.Select the ' optional updates ' and install from there driver for HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor. This should solve Your problem.
As I already mentioned above solution will also help in finding drivers for graphic card.

i've just now installed Windows 7 Professional x64 on my HP COmpaq nw8440 that is equipped with an ATI FireGL V5200.
The system regognize it as an X1600 model and works quite fine but i use this mobile workstation to work with AutoCAD thus i _really_ need advanced functions working only when the video cart is correctly recognized as V5200.

Here You will find drivers for Vista 32bit (Windows 7 32bit) which need to be modded before installing.
I know then your card is not listed there but this card is based on x1600 chipset.
After modification it will be detected correctly as V5200.
Check ' Installation step by step guide ' which is on bottom part of HardwareHeaven page here.
You will find there instructions how to mod this drivers.
After installation You may have problem with setting correct resolution which will fit to your display. Check this thread how to solve this issue.
Please report about your results. From this what I see on the internet many people are looking for this answer.
If it will solve this problem I will ask administartors to set this thread as solved.

If You are using Windows 7 64 bit then use this driver to mod.
Yes You need to mod leagacy desktop drivers.
There isn't any other option. I'm using them on nc8430 models (which have ATI x1600) without any problems.
From this what I know they are working great with V5200 cards too.
Please test them and report about your results.
