Pavilion G6 doesn't start (Win7). Boot\BCD error, status 0xc0000225

[ Edited ]

Hello,

My 4 month old Pavilion G6-2155sf cannot boot. In normal startup it just gets stuck on the windows logo.

If i press F11 i get this message :

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the
cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Boot\BCD

Status: 0xc0000225

Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data."

Also after pressing F2 i did a hard drive quick test and i've had this result :
Short DST : FAILED

I'm leaving for my end of study internship next week and this computer is my work tool, please help me :smileysad:

Thank you for your time,

Guillaume Belouch

P.S : No software or hardware modification/installation or anything was done in the past week. Also computer had no internet access for the past week so i doubt it can be a virus.

Re: Pavilion G6 doesn't start (Win7). Boot\BCD error, status 0xc0000225

Hi,

First of all, the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) error would indicate a failing Hard Drive which is also consistent with the start-up issue - the only realistic option in this case would be to replace the drive.  The Hard Drive is a warranty item so you should contact HP and arrange for this to be replaced.  Normally what happens is that HP will send you a new drive, you pay a small deposit which is refunded when you return the defective HDD.

If you live in the US, contact HP Here.

If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

It is just possible that rebuilding the boot data may help - you can try this as follows.

If you don't already have one, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD.  Download the relevant ISO from the links below.

Windows 7 32bit

Windows 7 64bit

You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, or if you already have this, tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert the Rescue CD.  Select Boot options ( usually f9 ), use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD drive and hit enter.  You may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue' - do this if asked.

When loaded, select Repair Your Computer and choose the Command Prompt.  When this loads, enter the following commands and hit enter after each one - include spaces as shown.

Bootrec.exe

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

c:

cd boot

attrib bcd -s -h -r

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /RebuildBcd

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

Remove the Rescue CD and try rebooting the notebook.

Regards,

Re: Pavilion G6 doesn't start (Win7). Boot\BCD error, status 0xc0000225

Ouch...everything worked as you said until the last step =(

After bootrec /RebuildBcd it said :

"Successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations : 0"
which i think is a problem. It is surprising before prior to start the repair it found the windows 7 in the page where i had to click on repair.

After that i get :

bootrec /fixmbr

"The operation completed successfully"

bootrec /fixboot

"The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."

Re: Pavilion G6 doesn't start (Win7). Boot\BCD error, status 0xc0000225

I had this exact screen : (this is not my printscreen)

http://www.precisesecurity.com/tools-resources/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/system-recovery-options-OS...

except it said partition size : 432647 MB and location was (C:/) Local Disk

So first it detects its installation but then no ?

Hi,

Unfortunately it would look like the volume is indeed corrupt, which coupled with the DST error, would tend to confirm that the drive has indeed failed.

My best suggestion now would be to contact HP straight away and get the HDD replaced under warranty - make certain you still have a set of Recovery Discs/Media to be able to reinstall the OS on the new drive, if you don't, you should be able to order this at the same time.

Thank you David, I will call HP then and use the warranty.

When you say i must have a set of recovery disc, does the one i just burnt after downloading the ISO file you mentionned in your first post suffice?

Re: Pavilion G6 doesn't start (Win7). Boot\BCD error, status 0xc0000225

Hi,

The CD you've just created only contains recovery tool etc and is not an installation disc ( DVD disc ) which for Windows 7 is typically around 2.5Gb to 3.2Gb in size.

There are 2 main options available to you.

1.  Order a set of HP Recovery Discs and use these to reinstall the OS on the new drive - the procedure for this is described in the HP document Here.

2.  You can create your own Windows 7 installation disc.

Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).

An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.

You can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your notebook - probably Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.

Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit

Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/how-to-activate-windows-7-by-phone.aspx

Any additional drivers and software you may need can be found Here.
