Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

HP Pavilion dv6-3194ca

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1

Intel i7 CPU q720 @ 1.60 GHz

Since buying the laptop a couple of months ago, it randomly re-starts.  I have minidump set to be created but no minidump files are created.  There is a lock symbol on the minidump folder, and i don't know if this would prevent file creation.

Been unable to pinpoint the cause, so any ideas would be appreciated.  Are there others with the same model having this problem?

Re: Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

A dump file will onty be created if you get a Blue Screen, random restarts will not log anything anywhere most of the time

You can look in Event Viewer for clues, maybe something is acting up and logging an event just before the restart.

Also check Contol Panel (icon view) > Action Center, see if anything is reported in there.

These are tough to solve most of the time.

Update all your drivers, use HP Support Assistant

.

Re: Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

Hi Mumbodog

Thanks for the info.  I looked in the event viewer but the event prior to the re-start was around 50 mins before the PC re-started.  I also looked in the Action Center but couldn't see anything logged.

So I used a clean re-start to eliminate drivers being a problem.  I left the laptop an returning the laptop has re-started but with a message say it had recovered from an unexpected shutdown.  it also created a minidump file, shown below:

It seems to be the usbhub.sys that's the problem, but I'm not sure if that is correct or how to resolve the isse.  Any help much appreciated.

Re: Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

FE is a USB harware error, it could be a connected device or an internal (motherboard) usb hardware error.

Disconnect USB devices that you don't need, see if the crashes stop, if they do, then connect then back one at a time to test each one.

Re: Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

Hi Mumbodog

I did initially connect a few poewered external HDDs to the laptop through a USB Hub, but when the probelm materialised I disconnected all external devices, including the USB Hub.  the only external USB devices now connected are the mouse and keyboard conected directly into the laptop USB ports.  The problem still occured.  I have just uninstalled all USB Controllers, and re-started the laptop to see if the problem happens again.  Not sure if re-installing the USB Controllers will install clean USB drivers or use the existing ones.  I have used the HP Support assistant and all drivers, BIOS, etc are uptodate.  I was reading somewhere where the problem could be WMD drivers, and using WMF drivers might cure the problem., any thoughts on this?

Re: Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

I don't think video drivers would cause a usb error, but its windows so you never know for sure.

Yes when you uninstall a device in DM, it will install fresh driver from the driver store, which are considered a clean copy of the original file.

Re: Pavilion dv6 randomly shuts down

Hi Mumbodog

Thanks again for the info.

I will monitor the laptop for a while to see if the clean USB drivers cures the problem and I will post back either way.  If it doesn't cure the problem it may well have to go back to the store.
