Ralink RT3290 wi-fi card is blocking upgrade to Windows 8.1 - G6 2233sw

[ Edited ]

Hello,

After spending last 2,5 days trying to upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1 I think I have nailed the problem what was blocking it. Unfortunatelly, two souutions I have found can not be used for me. I am dissapointed with both HP and MS.

My laptop is a HP g6 2233sw model:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=pl&lc=pl&dlc=pl&docname=c03540697

HP drivers page:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=pl&dlc=pl&lc=pl&product=5322631&

Product number:

C6G81EA#AKD

Windows 8 64bit

I've decided to play safe, so my approach to the upgrade was (English is not my first language, so sorry for errors):

1. Recover the factory image form HP Recovery disks (got them from the HP store, so no issues related with burning)

2. Recover Clean system image form the Recovery HDD partition. Why? Because by doing so, most of the bloatware is not present, like the Norton trials etc. - less potential issues. Only System, HP programs, and Cyberlink media suite is present.

3. Update Windows 8, all of them even optional ones. Wupdate the default start screen apps.

4. Update HP Support Assistant, later - check for updates (found 14, not all drom the availiable on the website, but that is normal for it)

5. Download and try to install Windows 8.1 from the Store.

Failure. Always on the step - preaparing devices, 81%. Blue screen with a sad face with system_thread_exception_not_handled on the bottom. Windows 8 recovered, error 0XC1900101-0X30018

The text error in theory could indicated graphics card problem, but this is a simple model with iGpu HD300. NEvertheless I've tried repeating all the steps with different Intel display drivers versions, both from the HP website, one most recent from the Intel webpage. Failure. That's three times repeating all that steps, I hope you can imagine how many hours it took. I've tried different approaches to step 4 (add more hours), like i.e. installing manually every update for my model from the HP website (ones omissed by HP SA included). Failure.

To cut short. I've suspected the Ralink crappy chip from the beginning. There is always some issue with them. And I was not mistaken. When I have eliminated all possibilities, it became obvious that only it has left. Also, on the Answers Microsoft, as well as other forums fingers are pointong on the RT 3290. I think that the issue is, that there is not never, either on HP servers or Windows Update than
5.0.25.0

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-119873-1&cc=pl&dlc=pl&lc=pl...

Why couldn't HP use a normal chip. like Atheros? Nevermind...

So, the solution.

Wi-fi is my only internet access option, so I can not use them. Even for launching the **bleep** Windows Store one has to have an internet access. Even when the Upgrade to 8.1 is already downloaded. If there would be an ISO to burn - prbolem solved.

- disable wi-fi in the BIOS (nope, don't have such option)

- physically remove the card (I am not willing to do so)

- instal 8.1 from a disk. I don't have one, HP is not willing to send one (thank you very much BTW...), Micorosft doesn't provide an ISO, and I am not willing to try ones from "unofficial" sources.

As you can see, there is no solution for me other than the disks, or HP finnaly doing something.

As for the Ralink, now MEdia Tek card. There seem to be adriver with a higher numeration on the Softpedia, but as it is an unnoficial source, I'm not even attempting it ->

5.0.34.0

Oh, before anyone asks, yes revereting to 5.0.2.0 didn't help.

To be hones I am bored with writing all that stuff, as it is something that HP engieneers should test and I am doing their job for them... As you can see above, I have relied on the factory image/settings, and not succeded - conclusion is simple, not caring for your customers... My theory is - provide an updated Ralink driver (maybe even that 5.0.34.0 will work - there is none on http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_downloads/01_windows.php).

PS If any of you cares, go to the Answers Microsoft forum, many people with HP laptops has the exact same problem, different code sometimes.

Bye

PS2 I have left for myself the Windows Update log from one of my first attempts, can provide whole - here just the part with the 0XC1900101-0X30018 error:

Re: Ralink RT3290 wi-fi card is blocking upgrade to Windows 8.1 - G6 2233sw

[ Edited ]

BTW, ASUS was alread able to provide the updated driver (version 5.0.34.1) for their customers... Should I really consider that brand instead of HP during my next purchase, ot are you will to FINALLY do something?

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/1e3a379f-585f-492e-ba3f-f96b284a589a/asus-p...

But now it seems, that the actual one provided is 5.0.35.0, availiable also here http://www.station-drivers.com/index.php/10-drivers/54-ralink but it is a separate driver source that I do not trust. Also, as there is no my card model number there, the driver might, but as well might not work.

Re: Ralink RT3290 wi-fi card is blocking upgrade to Windows 8.1 - G6 2233sw

I was finally able to lay my hands on an ethernet cable Internet connection, and was able to upgrade to 8.1 by removing both Ralink Bluetooth and Wi-Fi card from the device manager in Windows, nad proceed with that cable internet connection. I've decided to uninstall both devices from Ralink, as I wasn't sure which was blocking it (my money are still on wi-fi).

After that the Bluetooth driver number didn't change, and as for the wi-fi it changed first from AFAIR 5.0.25 to 5.0.26.6, and later to 5.0.34.0

Two issues remain:

- the wireless network diode under the F12 key is always white, even when wireless is disabled (should be red). Yes, I have the latest wireless buttons update for my model from the HP website

- laptop WILL NOT ENTER SLEEP MODE BY ITSELF. I can force it to go into that mode manually via the charms (or whatever the name is), but it will never go to the sleep mode by itself, in like for the default Energy Star power profile 20 minutes AFAIR. THIS IS NOT A NEW ISSUE, here is an old thread that was ignored

I was upgrading from Windows 8, HP G6-2233sw, i3-2370M, Intel HD 3000, 4GB RAM, Ralink (Mediatek) Bluetooth and wifi modules, Realtek LAN module

These are common issues, that seem not to bother HP.

There were some issues later (i.e. graphic card driver willing to update via WU was wrong, the latest from the Intel website worked ok etc.), but I don't see a point in revealing them as it seems the difficulties bother only the users, not MS/HP/Mediatek.

I just hope that upgrade to 8.2 will be easier, and Microsoft and HP will not leave their users in the dark as they did here...
