SimplePass and Windows 8.1

I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 on my HP Envy m4 and SimplePass quit working on the IE App. It still works for logging onto the computer so I know the reader is installed and working. Any idea how to fix?

Re: SimplePass and Windows 8.1

Kelly,

I hope I can help; I need some information first:

  • Which exact version of HP SimplePass are you using?

  • What is your exact product number / model number on that m4?

Locate the Notebook Product Number

===========   OR    ================

On your keyboard (Use the built-in keyboard, and not an external / USB controlled device):

  • Press the FN and ESC keys at the same time

  • Are you running Windows 8.1 Pro ?

  • Are you using a local login password or are you using your Microsoft Live account login to get into Windows?

Thanks!

Re: SimplePass and Windows 8.1

Kelly,

When you log into Windows 8.1, that is, into regular Windows, and the fingerprinter asks for your fingerprint,

  • Does it look differently than in the past (before you used Windows 8.1) login?

I ask because I am wondering whether the new, native Windows fingerprint software is working.

At this moment, I can offer the following:  Upgrade your HP SimplePass software to the latest version.

When the SkyDrive opens, find and open the file named:

Re: SimplePass and Windows 8.1

I have re-installed the latest version of SimplePass. Now it's sort of fixed. It works when I open an IE website on the desktop, but not when I use the app from the Start Page. Thoughts?

Re: SimplePass and Windows 8.1

Kelly,

I have heard that the apps native to the Start Screen, that is, the applications one finds on the original Start Screen when Windows 8 is installed, are "different" from the Desktop apps.  It's been a while since I read about the subject; I do remember that some tiles respond differently.

I cannot help you with this specifically because I have stripped out, (or at least disabled) the original Start Screen apps and rebuilt my Start Screen for my purposes.  This just means that I removed or disabled the "active tiles" and then "pinned to Start" those programs and applications that I like to use.

You can Google the subject, or you might just remove the IE Tile (Right click on Tile and unpin) that was installed originally and replace it with a new  "pinned" version from the program location.  That may work.

  • On the Desktop, Open a File Explorer window -- this used to be called the Windows Explorer window in pre-Windows 8 systems.

  • Navigate to this folder:  C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

Assuming that Internet Explorer is installed on your computer,

  • Look for "explore.exe" > Right-Click and select to "Pin to Start"

==========================================================================================

This is a method of using the "file location" of the program to create a "shortcut" for the Start Screen for the selected program.  You can use this method to create other "Start Screen" short cuts for many of your favorite programs.

How to find a program:  Search for the program > Right-Click > Open Location

If the results show you another ShortCut, Repeat:  Right-Click > Open location

Once you find the location of the some-program-name.exe (executable file), you can Right-Click and "Pin to Start" and / or you can "Send" the program to your desktop to create a shortcut there.

Good Luck.

Re: SimplePass and Windows 8.1

Success!

After pulling more of my hair out on this one spending many wasted hours  trying to get the HP simplepass software by Authentec to work after a Win8.1 upgrade,  I found this update dated 24 Jan 2014 and it worked fine in Win8.1 64bit pro on a  a HP notebook model dv7.7051ea entertainment pc with a Validity "pid0018" model Biometric fingerprint sensor (pid ID 0018 is reported in Device Manager).

Link is:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&softwareitem=cp-128228-1

This is not by Authentec but by Softex. It works fine with the latest available Validity sensor on the dv7 pc dated Sept 2013. It does look very basic & very much a work-in-progress. Softex website is http://www.softexinc.com if you want more information not offered by HP

I followed other folks' advice to remove biometric drivers and malfunctioning Authentec software first and stop auto-driver re-install, then reboot, install driver software sp63224, then install HP simplepass sp64679.exe (by Softex). This didnt work at first, then I had one more go at deleting the Biometric driver, rebooting and then all worked OK after re-enroling fingerprint(s) and then enroling websites and ticking all login boxes on the Softex startup screen (sharp intake of breath).

Good luck to all who are still trying to get their fingerprint login working again aftre the Win8.1 "upgrade" and thanks to all those who offered help!

Re: SimplePass and Windows 8.1

twog,

Thanks for posting what worked for you.

In that the version of SimplePass 8.x that you installed is listed as recommended for Desktops, it is a good find.

Remember, all who read this -- Regarding Version 8:

  • SimplePass Version 8.x is NOT compatible with any previous SimplePass V6.x version.  If you have been running Version 6, know that you cannot "upgrade" to version 8 -- these are two separate programs.
  • Any SimplePass version prior to Version 8.x must be completely uninstalled.
  • You must install the appropriate (Validity Sensor) fingerprint Driver for your hardware and for version of Windows you are running.
  • The Webcards are handled differently in the Database for this new Softex version -- the 8.x Export is filetype .opi (and not .tsd).
  • SimplePass Version 8 requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
