Unable to Start, and Startup Repair Does Not Work

I try to start my laptop, and to goes to a screen that says:

"Windows failed to start. A Recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

"If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose Start Windows Normally.
"(Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice.)

"Launch Startup Repair
"Start Windows Normally"

Choosing to launch startup repair takes me to a black screen with the cursor in the center. Choosing to start Windows normally makes the speakers pop, and takes me back to the same message.

OS: Vista
Model: HP Pavilion DV5-1166US

I've probably left off some information you need. I'll post any you ask for, and I appreciate any help provided. Thanks.

Hi , can you boot to safe mode with command prompt by hitting F8 at startup ??? If so when command prompt has loaded type    bootrec fixmbr   hit enter

then type bootrec fixboot   hit enter

Try to reboot to ur desktop . Let me know if this corrects your problem .. Checkurtech

Thank you so much for the reply! For some reason, Startup Repair did not work earlier, but it does now. Got 'er started back up.
