hi ive had a major problem trying to recover from a windows problem so i decided to recover from my recovery disks however i had an "error 0x400110020000 1005 if problems persist contact hp support" message 34% into the format. ive borrowed a copy of vista from a friend and installed to get me up and running but i want to reset to factory condition any ideas as to the error message??? how can i put machine back to factory conditions??

That error there with many other 0x400... error codes are related to Recovery Media themselves .. you should contact HP and get them to ship you out some media, and give them that error code and tell them it won't finish and it only gets to 37% and they should be able to ship them for free...

That is actually incorrect.
The reason you get a 0x400 error is because the OEM hard drive was replaced with a retail hard drive. OEM drives are "tattooed" or branded.. and the recovery media will search for it before installing. Prevents the spread (aka pirating) of OEM recovery media to computers that it did not ship with.
That's why the original poster said they were able to install a retail version of Vista... retail OSes do not search for specific branding of a hard disk drive.

Apologies.. I didn't post the fix.
Take your system to an HP authorized service center, such as Best Buy.. and they will "brand" the hard drive so you can use your recovery media. Prepare to pay for their service..

Just to say, if you have a Vista Machine that does not seem to work properly with this drive it could down to the following issue:
I have a HP Pavillion S3350.uk (slimline) Media Center PC, and put this drive in as an Upgrade to the machine.
When you try to recover the operating system (using the Recovery Media, or indeed the recovery partition), you will get the following error message:
Error 0x400110020000 1005
If this issue continues contact HP Support.
This is due to the fact that the provided recover CD images from HP do not support the 1.5tb harddrive, (which is in direct contrast to their support documentation on their website which states you can upgrade the machine with *any* hard drive.
After having gone through this same issue and come out the other side (With no help from HP at all, as they are quite clueless on this issue and will ALWAYS blame the Recovery Media AND the HD and not their WimPE recovery mechanism which is flawed.
This error message is caused by (in my case) a 1.5TB hard drive upgrade, and the fact that their WimPE recovery mechanism deletes ALL partitions on the HD before it starts, yet is incapable of using the HD as it does not support a 1.5TB HD.
This is in contradiction to their own website which states you can upgrade the harddrive and DOES NOT mention a limitation, see:

The only way around this problem is to get the original hard drive (Or another Blank/Spare HD of under 1TB Capacity however I would recommend 80Gb or less), be careful as the HP recovery process is indiscriminate and will ERASE ALL PARTITIONS on the HD before it starts so make sure you have nothing on the drive you don't want to loose! Recover the original image to this HD using the recovery media.
Then you will have to create a 500GB partition on the new 1.5TB HD, and CLONE the original HD to the new 500GB partition on the 1.5TB HD.
HP DO NOT supply on their website drivers that support SATA Drives OVER 1Tb (This can be bourne out by extending the 500gb partition and it failes at after a size of 1Tb 24Gb.
The only place that you can get the correct drivers from is NVIDA (For my HP S3350 Media Center), once you install those, you will be fine
Took a lot of head work to work it out, as HP are quite clueless on this, and blame the recovery media...
I am still waiting for them to solve my issue by providing me with recovery media that support the large drives, as at present this product is not fit for purpose and you cannot do what they say you can do in the upgrade manual above and that is UPGRADE THE HD!!
I won't hold my Breath for a response!

just to add....
i believe you need to contact hp for the issue, because sometimes it is not the issue regarding on the harddrive or recovery disc only....
because sometimes it is the connection between the hard drive and the motherboard, thats why you cannot install the recovery disc and you received an error message...

I am getting that error too and I have the original components. My problem started with a message that audio was not installed. Then I could not connect to the internet. After attempting a recovery from the hard drive, I ended up with nothing but a message saying BOOTMGR MISSING -CAD. That goes on over and over. Next I tried the downloaded recovery cd. I got the error message Ox400.... after the machine tried to reformat. I ordered Recovery Discs from HP and they do nothing. Online Support says they will send me new ones. I don't have much faith in those working either. I have a notebook pavilion with Vista. I have never done a downgrade or upgrade. I sure hate the thought of trashing this 18 month old laptop but what is the solution? Could it be my motherboard? Thanks to anyone with a suggestion or remedy.

HEY EVERYONE I'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM AS WELL AND HERES THE SPIRIT: I HAVE AN HP dv6830us WITH VISTA HOME PREMIUM out of the factory. when I tried to run the recovery cd's to restore to factory image like everyone else; but , the first time I did this and subsequent times I tried to re-install to factory settings, there was nothing wrong with my pc I tried to recover to have the factory image. nothing more. Also, bear with me, I did incounter issues with my pc and under warrenty sent it in where they replaced the LGB ( I don't know what that is ) twice. I think it's the mother board. Anyway, in total it's been four times that I tried and all four times I got this 0x400112000001005 error And all four times I recovered by simply reinstalling the cd's until they worked !?!? don't ask me the last time I did it it took three attempts. I hope this helps someone.
