Driver for recording on Audacity

I don't know if I am on the correct forum for this, but I have to record on Audacity. I have installed it, read the tutorials, set the preferences, put in the mic, saved the project, and then clicked on record. I also have downloaded LAME to create an MP3. These are the instructions from my online class that I am doing this for. I CAN'T RECORD. Could it be my driver? It is a Microsoft, which I have been warned against. How do I change this, and what do I change it to?

What does Audacity say or what happened when you click on "Record"? What do you mean by "I CAN'T RECORD"?
