I shouldn't have to turn off a firewall to fill out an order form for starters. Second, I'm on a Linux computer using Opera browser right now and still get the error.

You may always contact with HP through phone and order recovery disk. How to do it all informations here (just choose Your country).

I have to admit, I'm not feeling very confident about spending ~$20 on a recovery kit after my experience so far.

Your friend had a chance to burn recovery disk on his own with HP aplication in his pre-installed Vista system. He even didn't made backup of his system. Now he will be paying only for his mistakes.

Can you assure me I'm not just going to be directed to the website to fill out the same form that's giving me an error now?

You can say that again. I'll definitely be anyone I deal with to stay clear of hp proprietary systems in the future. Not being able to boot from a retail operating system DVD is ridiculous, but not being able to get a replacement disk in a timely manner is retarded. Especially considering I have to pay for it.

Thanks for trying to help guys, but this laptop is turning into more trouble than it's worth. I'm just going to instruct her to return it.

1. If you phone HP  they will take the order, not direct you to a site to fill out a form.

2. None of us can assure you that Recovery Disks will boot. The retail disk should boot and run_whether it accepts the license key later is a MS issue. HP machines are not proprietary in regard to retail disk.I booted with retail Win 7 DVD and installed on my laptop.

3.You mention telling your friend to return it_is this a new machine? If so you have a 1 yr warranty to cover hdd and any other failures_which just might include a faulty CD/DVD drive since it won't boot from the DVD. Reading a game CD uses a different laser than a DVD.

Yes I may assure you about it just like Cheryl did in above post.

I'm using Windows 7 and Windows XP retail DVD's on HP laptops without any problems.

I was wondering why you had such an idea, but apparently after reply wriiten by Vidya you where little confused.

From this what I undersatnd you've got laptop with linux, right? So You may insert this retail Vista DVD to it and check will it boot from it or not. If it will not then you've got problems with corrupted DVD. If it will boot then you may do something like this:

 • unmount optical drive from yours and your friend laptop
 • mount yours optical drive into this friend laptop
 • try again to boot on friends machine from this Vista retial copy

One more thing this is user to user forum.

Edit:

As Cheryl wrote you don't need to check this on your own. Use your warranty and contact with HP. They will fix it for free (of course if it's under warranty).

Re: New laptop harddrive; non-OEM Vista disk

I just want to note for anyone else who comes across this that these guys apparently don't know what they're talking about and they're just trying to get you to buy a recovery disk that you don't need.

Don't waste your time on the hp forums, call the support lines and scream at the customer service person. You will get transfered to someone who knows what they're talking about.
