2nd hard drive missing after sleep

I have a frustrating issue that HP Chat didn't seem to grasp at all.

I have a DV9810us Notebook running Vista SP1. No modifications, either HW or SW.

The Notebook has a 2nd drive bay into which I have installed a known good WD 120GB drive

Problem:

When the notebook enters sleep and then resumes, the 2nd drive disappears!. I have to reboot the notebook, in order to see the drive again.

After searching Google, I have seen a few instances where other people have seen this, but no resolutions offered.

Anyone here seen this or can offer some help?

Update the BIOS and Chipset.  Alternatively, if you go into device manager->drives...there should be settings to allow you to turn the device off to save power.  Also, you could check your power management settings.

Unfortunately neither of these suggestions helped.

The Bios etc is up to dat.

The Sleep settings for the drive are turned off.

The problem still ocurrs.

pccrew, can you tell me, I would like to do the same thing as you with having a second drive with a different OS. I have two questions: 

1. You had to order a special drive HP right? I have a 160g normal laptop HD but the pins are all different.

2. Once you had the drive in there and install the OS, how do you boot to the second HD? Do you have to go to F9 to change the boot sequence?

I didn't have a 2nd OS, I was using the 2nd drive as just more storage

HP ended up fixing this issue by changing out the Harddrive. The drive was definitly ok, but there must have been some slight timing or otherwise incompatability when resuming after sleep.

They changed the drive for a different manufacturer and sudenly the problem goes away!
