AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

I have a Elitebook 8530p, purchased in late Dec. 2008. I have been getting frequent AsGHost.exe errors. While this does not seem to cause any major problems, it does cause the log in to Credential Manager to fail and is generally annoying for a new machine. Part of the reason I bought the machine was the finger print reader for a single point and simple log in but if the AsGHost.exe error occurs then the Credential Manager log in fails and I have to log in again. This can happen at Start Up or after the machine has already been running for a while.

I have also gotten a wcescomm.exe error but that is much less frequent.

Thanks,

Jack

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

I see the same error on a Elitebook 8730.  Mostly when you login to the machine.  everything I google points me to

"asghost.exe is a process belonging to Cognizance Identity and Access Management. Cognizance Identity and Access Management is a security solution designed on the concept of the unified user identity. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems."

So I updated the HP Protect Tools Security software to the latest version but that did not work.... I also checked the HP update tool, and nothing appeared.

Is there any other HP preloaded software that may be associated to this?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

i came and signed up at the forums after searching for asghost.exe because i'm starting to have similar problems.

i have an 8510W that's 5 months old.  fingerprint reader didn't work so tried to reboot and asghost.exe was trying to shut down.  finally got it working, but also need to know what to do about this - and also am not finding answers.

does anyone from HP monitor these forums at all?

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

I have several HP dc7900 minitower computers that were purchased during the last three months of 2008.  Several of them are now having this same problem.  None of them have a fingerprint reader nor do we use the Credentials Manager.  Although the computers continue working after clicking OK in the error dialog it is very annoying to have this problem on new computers.  A permanent solution would be greatly appreciated.

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

whats' odd is we updated the Embedded Security software (part of the HP Protect Tools package) and we have not received the ASGHOST.exe error.  we just got a dc7900 so once we put our image on there i'll see if we get the error.

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

Thanks Jonathan, I updated the Embedded Security software on the two computers that were reporting the error about a week ago and have not had the problem since.  Looks like this solved the problem.

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

How did you update the software? We have four Elite laptops, bought at the same time, and are all exhibiting this anomaly.

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

I'm sure everyone found the software alright, but if not, go to support.hp.com and search your model.  You can find the Embedded Security for HP ProtectTools under the Software - Security downloads.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys!

Re: AsGHost.exe error and Credential Manager

I found that HP Credential Manager was conflicting with Microsoft ISA Client.  Once I uninstalled the ISA Client, the error message went away.  I hope this helps.
