Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

I bought this laptop with windows 7 home premium (it came with blu-ray pre-installed).

Blu-ray worked great. I upgrades to windows 7 professional (fresh install). Installed all the programs and drivers from the hp software page as it suggested.

Dvd function works, but it will not play blu-ray. Under computer, it will read and display the name of the disc. Smart media dvd opens begins to load, then the drive begins to turn on and off for about 1 second on and then 1 off. Smartmedia freezes and disc drive continues untill I: a. remove disc. b. use task manager to close smartmedia.  I have uninstalled my firewall (even though I installed it before I had installed my firewall and reinstalled the smartmedia) with no success. Checked that all my drives are upto date, they are. I believe my bios is on F13. I have been reading all I can and have not found anything to help. This is an entertainment laptop, what good is to if I can not watch blu-ray on it :smileywink:

I would love to have this function restored. Please let me know if you need more information or suggests, Thanks.

Re: Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

Hi,

If you're using HP MediaSmart DVD to play the Blu ray disc, try the following.

HP now provides a version of Cyberlinks PowerDVD 10 which seems to be a better solution.  Download the installer for this on the link below and save it to your Desktop.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53001-53500/sp53029.exe

When the download has completed, open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for HP MediaSmart DVD and select Uninstall - when this process has completed, restart the notebook.

When windows  has reloaded, double-click the installer for PowerDVD 10 to start the installation.  When this has completed, see if your Blu ray discs now play OK.

Regards,

Re: Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

Thanks for taking the time to help:smileyhappy:

I used a program to remove the smartmedia dvd and all the registry junk.  Downloaded the setup file to my desktop for the PowerDVD 10. Then disablied my firewall and virus protect (shut wifi off first). Restarted my computer. Installed the PowerDVD 10 and then restarted again.

I incountered what sounded like the same problem. It began, and froze and the disc sounded like it was spinning up to speed then stopping over and over.

This blu-ray disc did for-sure work before I upgraded my operating system with the smartmedia dvd. My windows 7 is all updated from microsoft on service pack 1.  Is there other updates or did I accidently mess up somewhere? other suggestions?

Hi,

You're welcome :smileyhappy:

It's possible that this is a Hardware issue, but can you let me know which Antivirus and Firewall application you are using.

In the meantime, try the following.

Uninstall Cyberlink PowerDVD 10, then restart the notebook.

When windows has reloaded, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive.

Run the Power DVD 10 installer again and then without restarting, check if it will load a Blu ray disc.

Regards,

Re: Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

I am using Comodo Firewall and Ad-ware Virus protection.

I tried your suggestion and CyberLink PowerDVD begins to load the Blu-ray then begins the on-off thing and only loads to 99% until it freezes.

Hi,

Try the following.

Open Comodo and click the Defense+ tab.  Click Defense+ Setting and in the following window, click the 'Execution Controls Settings' tab.  Click the Exclusions button and in the following window, click on Add and select Browse.

In the left hand pane, open up Computer, open up Local Disk C, open up Program Files ( if you have a 64bit installation, open Program Files (x86) ), open Cyberlink, click on the actual entry PowerDVD10 ( ie not the + sign next to it ) and then click the right facing arrow to move it into the selected items pane.  Click Apply, click Apply in the next window and then click Ok.  Close Comodo.

Restart the notebook.

See if you can now play Blu ray discs.

Re: Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

hello,

I just added the PowerDVD 10 to the comodo firewall like you suggested. I am still unable to play the movie. The PowerDVD 10 froze apon opening.

Just to be sure, my disc-drive can be assumed to be functioning properly because I can open computer and read the disc name and open it and see files on the blu-ray disc, right?

Thanks

Re: Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

Hi,

Yes, I would say the drive looks to be OK and that this is a software issue.

Now that PowerDVD10 has been added to Comodos exclusion list, try uninstalling PowerDVD 10, restarting the notebook and then reinstalling the application again.

Re: Blu-Ray issue on DV7 3173nr-smartmedia freezes after it begins to load blu-ray

Hi,

Try the following.

Uninstall PowerDVD 10 and then restart the notebook.

When windows has reloaded, download and install the free 15 day trial of  Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 5 on the link below - I'm in no way suggesting that you will have to purchase this, but if it works Ok, it will at least defintely show that this is a software issue.

Let me know.
