Can't Adjust Display Brightness After Fresh Install of Windows 7

[ Edited ]

I have a Pavilion dv2945se laptop. I have fully updated the Nvidia geforce 7150m  drivers. My laptop came with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I cannot adjust the display brightness. I have narrowed down the problem to the Generic PnP Monitor driver. How can I fix this problem?

Edit: By "can't adjust the display brightness" I mean that every time I go into power options and attempt to use the slider, Windows Explorer freezes. Also, my fn+F7 and F8 brightness keys work before I log into windows but not after. I think something is loading when I log into windows that causes the problem. So I went into Safe Mode, but then whatever controls the brightness didn't load when I went into safe mode, so that was not helpful. I've also gone through MSConfig and disabled all the startup programs, but again I have the same problem. The brigtness keys work before logging into Windows but not afterward.

When I disable the Generic PnP Monitor device I (1) can't adjust the brigthness at all and (2) the Power Options window stops freezing. That is how I narrowed the problem to the Generic PnP Monitor driver.

Please see my edits. Right clicking the desktop and clicking personalize is not going to help.

Re: Can't Adjust Display Brightness After Fresh Install of Windows 7

I finally solved this by uninstalling the ALPS touchpad driver. Because there are no Windows 7 drivers for my laptop even though it's listed in the models capable of upgrading to Windows 7, I used the Windows Vista touchpad drivers. That was the cause of my problem with adjusting the brightness. I don't know why that worked, but I narrowed it down by disabling all the startup processes and then starting them one at a time to see what caused the problem. As soon as I started Apoint.exe, I started having problems.

Now I just have to figure out how to disable touchpad tapping without the ALPS drivers.

I used this ALPS driver and everything started working perfectly.
