Can't Update Bios on G70-120em

Hi

I have a G70-120em laptop and for some reason I forget now I flashed bios F.32A released 2008/12/11 which was probably older than the bios I already had on the laptop.  Anyway I have been trying to upgrade to the latest bios and it just freezes the computer completely, I have to pull the power lead out and take out the battery if its in.  It starts up Insyde and says do you want to flash the bios, if I press yes, the bar goes up a little bit then the application disappears, it freezes and the fan comes on at full speed, the power button won't even turn it off.

I have tried every bios on the site, all the others give "Verify Error" and then lock up the laptop, except the latest F3C.A which does as described above and F.32A actually flashes fine and doesn't lock up and correctly restarts the laptop, this is the bios that is already on the laptop though.

I have even tried a method of extracting the bios file and putting it on a usb, renaming it to 3616.bin (took a while to find the name) and holding down the windows + b key, it seems to flash it, after a while it does a lot of beeping and turns itself off, but the bios never updates.

I have tried with and without SP2 installed, after a fresh install, I took out 2gb RAM and tried (Laptop has 4gb RAM), I tried all the bios's available for my laptop.  I guess I can live with not upgrading the bios but it would be nice to find out what's stopping me doing it!  One thing is I have installed new memory and a new hard drive since I've had it.

Thanks

Mike

Re: Can't Update Bios on G70-120em

I understand you knew the procedure of Insyde BIOS RECOVERY.

I do not own your model, so there is no real experience.

The latest BIOS of your model is F.3C A, sp44656.exe, that support platforms of

PlatformName=D5AS
PlatformName2=360B
PlatformName3=3611
PlatformName4=360C
PlatformName5=3616
PlatformName6=3612
PlatformName7=3617
PlatformName8=
PlatformName9=

3616 is the correct platform for your model. Here is the info that I got for some HP platforms.

[System Information]
SysId1=0x360B
SysName1=Compaq Presario CQ50 Notebook PC
SysId2=0x360C
SysName2=Compaq Presario CQ70 Notebook PC
SysId3=0x3612
SysName3=Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC
SysId4=0x3611
SysName4=HP G50 Notebook PC
SysId5=0x3616
SysName5=HP G70 Notebook PC
SysId6=0x3617
SysName6=HP G60 Notebook PC

Download sp44656.exe, (1/1 , 2.5M) , extract it and rename 360BF3C.fd to 3616.bin and do the BIOS recovery procedure.

Just to make sure you have the correct procedure, I copied it again

1. Disconnect battery and AC adapter
2. Connect USB Floppy drive or a USB Flash Drive or insert a CD (whichever u choose).
3. While press [Win]+[B], plug-in the AC Power adapter and then press Power button.
4. Release the buttons after it read the crisis disk. There will be no sounds, no beeps. It took about 2-3 minutes and notebook powered down itself.

My best suggestion is to use other USB thumbdrive, or burn it in CD or use USB floppy driver, there is a posibility that the current thumbdrive is not compatible.

Since this procedure is in the level of HIGH RISK, please use at your own risk!

Re: Can't Update Bios on G70-120em

Hi

Yeah I have done exactly what you said before.  Extracted it, renamed 3616.bin and put it on the root of my USB drive.  Made sure there was no CD in the drive else it reads from that instead of the USB drive.  It finds it on the USB stick, mine has a light on it and it shows access for a extended period, when its not called 3616.bin it just goes in a sort of loop.  Wait quite a long while and then it starts beeping and the beeps get closer together at the end, then it turns itself off, but the bios is never updated.

I did it the same way except I release Windows + B when the lights come on (from pressing power button), if I hold it for longer it just stays on a black screen.  It doesn't matter so much now anyway, at least its still working.

If you prefer USB thumbdrive, please make sure it has been formated as FAT. Have you try using CD?
