Good Afternoon,
I have owned a HP DV6 2040sa laptop for just over 11 months now. I have been pleased with my purchase and have not experienced any significant difficulties until recently.
Yesterday I booted my laptop and to my surprise I was advised that a check disk scan was recommended. However I had the option to continue if I pressed any key within 10 seconds.
I decided to exit the scan within the 10 second period; however the timer continued to count down then froze at 1.
I performed a hard shut-down on my laptop and restarted, only to be confronted with the same message.
After some time on shutting down and restarting, I switched off the WIFI and this time the computer booted to the login screen.
Once logged on I ran an AVG virus scan whilst I read some articles on check disk problems.
I haven't restarted the laptop since, as I am conscience that I may not be able to fully boot if this problem occurs again.
Could the WIFI adapter have had some effect on the boot?
Has anyone else experienced this problem with this laptop model?
Regards,

I don't think that a wireless card can affect a boot sequence. Turn it on and do a check disk: http://www.w7forums.com/use-chkdsk-check-disk-t448

Hi,
Should I schedule a check disk for next restart?
I found this fix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778 however as it is a hotfix I am dubious about installing it.
Any other ideas?

Yes, do it.
You don't have to install that hotfix yet. Just pass the check disk and next time don't interrupt it when Windows will schedule it itself..

Hi,
I followed your instructions, the message appeared and the countdown commenced...when it got to 1 it just skipped right past the check disk and continued onto the log in screen.
I've tried this twice, so there seems to be a definite issue with the check disk.
Any other suggestions before I try this hotfix?
Thanks,

If your system is fully patched using Windows Updates, it should already have this hotfix installed.
You can check your "autochk.exe" file version in C:\Windows\System32 folder
it should be version 6.1.7600.20538
If not apply the patch.

Thanks for your replies.
I have fixed the issue now. Quite simply.
chkntfs /X C:
This switched off the prompt for a disk check.

Not really a fix, now if you really do have file system problems you will never know until it is too late.
The only time chkdsk will run now is when you run it manually.

Hi Mumbodog,
I applied the patch to no avail.
I restarted the laptop, I allow the checkdisk to countdown then it bypasses without me pressing any keys.
This is a temporary solution and not a fix, I agree.
Do you have any further solutions?

I just wanted you to know what the downside of what you did was.
The only thing I can suggest it the possibility of a faulty hard drive, sata driver or hard drive controller on the motherboard, not likely but possible.
