I have to start by typing this phrase: PLEASE HELP.
This time before I do a clean install of Windows 7 on my HP g7-1070us notebook computer, I'd like to learn from the experts in the HP Forum community about the proper way to install the Chipset service pack. The last time that I had done a clean install of Windows 7 on my Pavilion, I was confident in each of the service pack installations aside from one: The Chipset.
My service pack installation order from the last time that I installed Windows 7 on my favorite laptop.
SP52791 INTEL CHIPSET INSTALLATION UTILITY AND DRIVER.
SP55029 INTEL RAPID STORAGE TECHNOLOGY (SATA CONTROLLER).
SP55028 INTEL HD GRAPHICS.
SP53851 SYNAPTICS PS/2 PORT TOUCHPAD.
SP51493 INTEL MANAGEMENT ENGINE INTERFACE.
SP52790 IDT HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO CODEC.
SP52799 REALTEK PCIe FE FAMILY CONTROLLER.
SP51986 REALTEK CARD READER.
SP55152 HP ON-SCREEN UTILITY.
SP52110 HP Support Assistant : One of the last service pack installed.
It provides the HP CoolSense technology. Each of the other options
is disabled without any exception. No auto updates allowed, no tune-ups
allowed, etc.
SP51638 LIGHTSCRIBE SYSTEM SOFTWARE
SP51605 BROADCOM 4313 802.11B/G/N (Gets me online for updates and antivirus)
SetupBtwDownloadSE.exe BROADCOM BLUETOOTH DRIVER AND SOFTWARE (REQUIRES INTERNET CONNECTION)
I just want to make sure I know how to install the Chipset service pack correctly (without any doubt) since I do have my doubts about just that one service pack.
I look forward to getting some quality feedback from the experts on this topic of installing the Chipset drivers.
Thank you and regards from Mark KF8RV.

Hi, Mark:
Before you install any drivers, if your installation of W7 does not include service pack 1, install windows and go right to service pack 1 before installing any other software.
Install SP1 from the direct download package...
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?
My preference is to download the ISO file, burn it to a dvd and install from that. That file contains both the 32 and 64 bit versions of SP1.
Then install in this order, and reboot after each of the first 3 installations...
1. SP52791 INTEL CHIPSET INSTALLATION UTILITY AND DRIVER
2. SP55028 INTEL HD GRAPHICS
3. SP52790 IDT HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO CODEC
4. SP52799 REALTEK PCIe FE FAMILY CONTROLLER
5. sp56154 Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows 7. Link below to the latest version of the driver.
Then you can install any of the rest in whatever order you want.
Go ahead and knock off these two first, I guess.
SP51493 INTEL MANAGEMENT ENGINE INTERFACE
SP55029 INTEL RAPID STORAGE TECHNOLOGY (SATA CONTROLLER).

Thanks for the information: my question is partially answered since I don't believe that the Chipset driver installs correctly.
After running the chipset service pack,
Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 3B42
Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 3B44
Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 3B46
Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller - 3B30
Intel(R) 5 HM55 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B30
continue to show driver version 6.1.7601.17514 and that doesn't seem correct to me.
I am confused by the Chipset driver's role. It just seems the version of each of the above, including perhaps a few others, should be changed after installing the Chipset service pack. I'm no expert ! ! !
Thanks and regards from Mark KF8RV.

Try manually updating those devices by clicking on each one in the device manager. Then click on the driver tab. Then click on update driver and browse to the installation folder that was created when you ran the chipset driver package: C:\SWSetup\sp52791. Make sure the include subfolders box is checked, and see if the driver installs that way.
You can also install the very latest chipset driver directly from Intel:
The top download is the auto install.

Paul:
Thank you. I was able to update the said drivers by following your instructions.
The downloading of SP1 for Windows 7 64-bit is another story since I don't know what file to download at that link. I would like to put the proper file unto a dvd for when I do another clean install.
I also installed the latest Broadcom driver that you provided a link to. It works but the signal from the router is slightly weaker than with the other driver. My signal into the router is excellent. I'm receiving the router at 66% and it's usually higher than that (with the other driver). Signal strength fluctuates since I'm in the basement room and the router is on the main floor. I just can't figure out why the reception of the router is slightly lower now. I'm not even sure which Broadcom wireless adapter is inside of this g7-1070us computer. I just know that it works and it has been reliable. I'll continue to use the present driver and see whether or not the signal strength improves. As with the old driver, I'm connected at 65Mbps.
Again I thank you.

You're very welcome, Mark:
You would download the first file listed on the MS page to burn to a DVD.
| 7601.17514.101119-1850_Update_Sp_Wave1-GRMSP1.1_DV | 1.9 GB |
You probably have the BCM 4313 WLAN card in your PC. That would explain the 65 MBPS connection, which I believe is normal for that model.
You can check what model WLAN card you have by going to the device manager, click on the network adapters section, and you will see both your wired and wireless card models listed there.
Regards,
Paul

Yes, that's the wireless adapter inside of my computer.
As I type this response, I'm downloading the specified file: SP1.iso.
It's a hefty download. The new cable modem is getting its first workout.
I have to ask: What in the world is a .iso file since I've never heard of it before now.
How do I execute the .iso file once I've re-installed Windows 7?
My HP Forum rating is Tutor and it should be novice or neophyte.
Thanks and regards from Mark KF8RV.

Hi, Mark:
An ISO ifle is an image file that needs to be burned to a DVD using the ISO burning feature in your DVD burning program.
The disk should autorun when you put it in the DVD-ROM drive. Many ISO files are bootable, such as the full windows 7 operating system ISO files you get when you puchase the downloadable version of W7 online from Microsoft.
If you do not have an ISO burning option with your DVD burning program, you can download this free utility that I use all the time.
Right on the main menu is an option to burn ISO Image.
Congratulations on your new forum ranking.
You learn as you go.
Just from this post alone, you can tell someone how to manually update a chipset driver, what order to install drivers, how to find the model network adapter you have in your PC, and soon you will know all about how to burn an ISO file, amongst other things, I'm sure.
Best Regards,
Paul

Yeah, I guess I'm learning as I go.
I burned the files to a dvd. It's just a matter of running the setup file or allowing it to autorun.
The process became self-explanatory when I clicked on the .iso file which it immediately opened the dvd drive and asked for a disc.
