Compaq 6530b one 'unknown device' still remains

I bought a new Compaq 6530b laptop that came with XP.  I reformatted it with the Vista Business 32 SP1 disc that came in the box.  I then visted the HP.CA web site and downloaded and installed all the latest files, however, there is still one remaining 'unknown device'.

I have installed files for ... latest BIOS and drivers for: chipset, graphics, wireless, modem, quick launch, touchpad, audio, fingerprinter reader.

I have also tried installing other files that didn't appear to do anything: card reader, bluetooth software, intel storage matrix, ProtectTools, HP Active Support Library.  (Aside from ProtectTools, do I need any of these other updates?)

I also went to Windows Update.  That found updates for the Gigabit NIC but there still remains ONE unknown device.  I will now try Vista SP2 but I doubt that will solve one remaining unknown device.

The laptop seems to be fine, but as a dealer, I don't want to deliver it to my client until I have it perfect.

If you haven't,try Embedded Security for HP ProtectTools. If no luck, use Device Manager to view the properties of the device and post the hd id.

Re: Compaq 6530b one 'unknown device' still remains

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for the idea, but installed the Embedded Security file did not help.  I still have that one 'unknown device'.

I checked the ID and is says:

ACPI\HPQ0004

*HPQ0004

I Googled it and found...

That device refers to "HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor".  I am not sure which driver you need specifically but you need to install all the security tools for the HP laptop.

Any ideas?

Richard

p.s. Do I really need to install the other files? (Bluetooth software, Card Reader, etc.)  I have a backup image before I tried these and would prefer to have the least amount of optional files as possible,

Re: Compaq 6530b one 'unknown device' still remains

This should be the one you need HERE

As for Bluetooth and the Card Reader, if the end user wants to use them the drivers/software needs to be installed.I use Bluetooth occasionally to connect to my cellphone, and my Card Reader I use very often to download photos from my digital camera memory card.

Re: Compaq 6530b one 'unknown device' still remains

Hi Cheryl,

With your help, I found it!  The answer is to download sp39155.exe (4.5 MB)

HP 3D DriveGuard for Microsoft Windows Vista

This package provides HP 3D DriveGuard for the supported notebook models and operating systems. HP 3D DriveGuard protects the hard drive (HDD) by "parking the heads" if the notebook is accidentally dropped or is abruptly impacted by another object. NOTE: HP 3D DriveGuard provides RAID volume support on systems with the Intel RAID Controller Driver version 8.0.2 (or later). Only Intel RAID Controllers are supported at this time.

I never thought to install this (or even the RAID / Intel Matrix file) since there is only a single hard drive.  I build desktops and server and know all about Intel Matrix RAID but I only use it for systems with multiple hard drives.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Compaq 6530b one 'unknown device' still remains

Hi Cheryl,

About the drivers for Bluetooth and the Card Reader, you don't need them.

I restored a Complete PC Backup image after a clean Vista SP1 install (that included the latest Intel chipset and graphics updates, I always use the latest file from the Intel.com as they are newer that those files on HP's site) and was able to read an SD memory card and connect to my cell phone WITHOUT any additional drivers.  Since it works, I don't bother installing anything else.  Remember the old saying, 'If it isn't broken, then don't fix it" :smileyhappy:

I'm not sure if I need the Intel Matrix RAID files (or maybe use the newer one from Intel.com).  To me, I cannot see why I'd need that for a laptop unless it had more than one hard drive.  Am I missing something?

[ Edited ]

Check this link about Intel® Matrix Storage Manager and please concentrate there on sentence:

"Whether using one or multiple hard drives, users can take advantage of enhanced performance and lower power consumption."

Check also other stuff which it gives.
